Our beloved father, grandfather, and husband, Hendra Sutiono, was a man of few words. A very quiet man, very patient and slow to anger. Very soft spoken though he was very well informed and highly educated. He had a Master degree in Civil Engineering from a very well-known university, The Institute of Technology of Bandung in Bandung, Indonesia. A well-known engineering institution for the civil engineering program. He himself taught at a university in Jakarta, Indonesia later in his career. He built his own civil engineering firm that builds major infrastructure such as dams and irrigation canals for the farmers in the villages, schools, shopping centers, meeting halls, office buildings, roads, bridges and many others.
Hendra Sutiono was baptized Catholic in his early thirties. Ever since, he deeply loved his Catholic faith. He prayed his blue Rosary daily, made yearly pilgrimage to a place honored for Mother Mary in central Java (Sendang Sono). Also he went several times to Lourdes. He helped the Arch Diocese of Jakarta for the expansion of the Diocese. He voluntarily designed and was in charge of the construction for the new Churches, Seminaries and Catholic Schools. As a close friend of the Arch Bishop Leo Sukoto S.J., he became the Arch Diocese major consultant, overseeing other engineers and contractors.
He loved art and classical music so deeply. He played the piano himself. He was such a loving husband and father. He made sure that all the children received a higher education and a master degree. All the children play a musical instrument.
Ten years ago he had a terrible accident that caused his brain injury. He tripped over and fell on the back of his head and injured his head severely. With the grace of God he survived the accident. Since then he suffered memory loss and developed dementia later in his life. His health slowly declines throughout the years. But with God's grace he remained strong till the end. He left us on November 1st, 2013 the day we celebrate the feast of All Saints day. May his soul rests in God's eternal home with His son Jesus and with all the Saints in heaven.
