Hilda was born on October 7, 1910, in Noack, Texas to Louise Schwarz Lange and Otto Lange and married to Henry Frank Werchan. She formerly lived in Taylor before moving to Austin and lived there over fifty years. She worked for Concordia College, St. Paul Lutheran School, and the University of Texas in food service. Her favorite saying when she said good-bye to someone was, "God Be With You".
She was very faithful and active in her Church, which included Trinity Lutheran in Taylor, St Paul Lutheran and Redeemer Lutheran in Austin. She was a member of church Dorcas, volunteered at the clothing store on Burnet Road that is church sponsored. Mama would tell of the times she had to ride a horse to school in the mud. One of the things she would say if you would ask her a question was "sure". She would tell stories of when she had a monkey as a pet on the farm. The pets everyone remembers her having are, Shorty a collie, Kittsy and Tricksy siamese cats, Tina her small black and white dog, Mike the yellow Florida cat (James brought it to her from Florida), and at the last her special cat, Allie. Her family always enjoyed getting together at her home on Easter, Christmas, and other special occasions with her family. She would always show appreciation for any gifts she received and would have a big smile. She had several friends she would go out to eat with on a regular basis when she was still able. She loved to bake goodies and to have family over for Sunday lunch or supper. Her gifts at Christmas for her children would be homemade cookies. She enjoyed baking and decorating cakes for special occasions, especially for her grand children's birthdays and weddings. She loved her grand, great grand, and great-great grand children very much and always enjoyed being with them. She lived at Parsons House for the past 13 years and everyone was very fond of her and enjoyed being around her. She continued to play straight dominoes until about 8 months ago.
