Homer Marshall was born in Newton Texas on August 15th, 1944 to Homer Sr. and Ethel Marshall. Shortly afterward, the family moved to Buffalo, New York where Homer spent his formative years. He had a paper route and worked weekends in his father’s Auto Repair Shop. Shortly after graduating from high school, Homer enlisted in the United States Air Force. He spent twenty years in the service and retired as a Master Sergeant in 1987.
Homer married his wife, middle school teacher Dorothy Lightsey Marshall, on September 27th, 1973. They had two children, a daughter, Barbara, who works in Los Angeles as a screen and television writer, and a son, Vincent, who followed his father into the service and is now a major in the United States’ Air Force Space Command. Homer’s firstborn son, Terry Marshall, also served his country as a decorated Marine.
Following his stint in the military, Homer worked as a case manager at the IRS for twenty years. He was an active marathoner who enjoyed spending time with family, photography, barbecue, fishing, football, basketball, and bad horror movies. He was known around the neighborhood as ‘the guy who is always running.’ He loved to laugh, tease, and tell stories, especially about childhood mischief with his best friend, Thomas. Most of his tales ended with, “And then me and Thomas took off running!”
Homer leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of forty-five years, Dorothy, his children; Terry, Barbara, and Vincent; his sisters, Waidene (Dave) Murphy and Gwen Marshall, as well as his brother, Anthony (Joanne) Marshall. He’s also survived by his aunts Mildred, Daisy, and Otha; and a host of nieces and nephews.
During a brief hospital stay, Homer wrote a note to his family. It said, “If it is my time, let me go. I thank God for my wife and children. I love you, Lord. God is good.”
