Hugo A. “Tony” Hatheway, beloved husband of Amalie “Maly” (Dittrich) Hatheway of 64 years, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 18, 2022 at the age of 87. Tony was the proud father of three sons: Richard (Angela) of Austin, Texas; James (Amy) of Cedar Park, Texas; and Michael (Gina Marie) of Oakton, Virginia. He was lovingly known as “Opa” by his grandchildren: William, Amanda, Melissa, Andrew, Jason, Jacqueline, John Michael and Matthew. Tony was always very involved with his sons and grandchildren, whether it was camping on a Boy Scout trip, attending concerts and marching band shows, or watching their numerous sporting events.
Tony was born on February 26, 1934 in Yumbel, Chile and lived as a child in Santiago, Chile where he enjoyed playing soccer. Tony was active in Boy Scouts from when he was a child in Chile and later served in a number of adult leadership roles both during and after his sons were in Scouting. In 1946, he and his parents (Maruja and Maurice Hatheway) moved to Columbus, Georgia when his father was stationed at Fort Benning. He attended high school there and was active in band and theater.
Tony and his parents then moved to Tucson, Arizona where he finished high school and attended the University of Arizona before enlisting in the United States Army. During college he joined the Concert Band and Marching Band, playing the bassoon, saxophone and clarinet. Tony loved many genres of music and theater and he especially enjoyed acting in musical theater throughout his life. Most recently he performed in the Zilker Hillside Summer Musicals in Austin, Texas. Tony and his wife Maly also shared a love of singing. They were members of the Austin Sangerrunde and Tony sang in the Mannenchor, or Men’s Choir, for many years while Maly sang in the Women’s Choir or Damenchor.
It was while Tony was posted in Germany that he met and married Maly. Returning to the United States in 1959, Tony was posted to Killeen, Texas and later Abilene, Texas. After Tony left active duty, he worked for National Life Insurance and Brown and Root in Abilene. The family moved to San Angelo where he worked for Sherwin Williams before transferring to Austin, Texas. In Austin he worked for Firestone and then worked at the Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission (TABC) for thirteen years. Tony joined the Texas Army National Guard in 1975. He returned to full-time active duty status in 1981 and was promoted in 1987 to Master Sergeant. He attended Army Inspector General School and worked for the Inspector General. In 1984 he graduated Magna Cum Laude from Park University and in 1989 he graduated from Sergeants Major Academy. Tony retired in 1994 with the rank of Sergeant Major.
Tony’s servant heart was most often seen at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church where he helped cook the Men’s Breakfast for many years, taught Vacation Bible School, and served both as a Lay Eucharistic Minister to the Sick and Homebound and as a Lay Reader, and participated in many activities with the Brotherhood of Saint Andrew.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to everyone at Altus Hospice and The Enclave at Cedar Park Memory Care Unit who cared for Tony.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Cook Walden and St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church. A Memorial Service will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to consider donating to the Michael J. Fox Parkinson’s Foundation or another charity of your choice in Tony’s name.
