He is survived by his niece Joan Gardner; his younger sister Esther Jacobson; his nephews Michael Sandgarten and wife Mary Ann, Joe Jacobson; great nephew, Jonathan and wife Amy; great niece, Rebecca and her husband Steven; and extended life companion family Lisa Robertson and husband Earl; as well as life companion’s grandchildren, Aaron and Kelli Robertson. He is also survived by great grand-nephews Oliver Bryan and Thomas Michael.
Hymie loved life, in particular, spending time with his pre-deceased life companion Dolores Maybery, his niece Joan and her dogs, as well as taking care of his life companion’s grandchildren Aaron and Kelli Robertson, traveling and visiting with his many friends.
He served in the United States Army in the Infantry for World War II. Later he was an independent businessman in Austin for over thirty years, beginning with D&S Service Station selling gasoline and services as well as lubricants to Austin auto parts dealers until retirement.
Hyman was a lifelong member of Congregation Beth Israel, Austin Lodge #12, A. F. & A. M. and Ben Hur Shrine Temple. He was especially proud of his time served in the Ben Hur Patrol and as a co-founding member of Ben Hur Mini B’s.
Hymie was a good friend to all, and you always saw him around Ben Hur Shrine for the past 65 years, helping the Shriners in any way he could be of assistance. He was a quiet individual, but always ready to help when needed. Even in the last year or so when he was unable to attend our stated meetings, Hymie insisted on wearing his Shrine shirts and jackets around his assisted care living area to advertise the Ben Hur Shrine and what Shriners did to help crippled and burned children.
The family would like to thank everyone at Silverado Senior Center who cared for him the last year and especially Michelle Olvera, who helped care for him over the past several years.
