

Hyman (Hymie) Samuelson was born April 11, 1919 in Donaldsonville, Louisiana and died in Austin, Texas August 23, 2010. Hymie graduated in 1940 from Louisiana State University with a degree in Civil Engineering. He served in World War II with the 96th Engineers. Hymie was a business owner of Slax Menswear alongside his cousin Danny Samuelson for over 50 years. He was an avid writer, teacher, family man, community volunteer, philanthropist, lover of all people young and old, Jewish community leader serving as President of Congregation Beth Israel and The Jewish Federation of Austin. He was active in many other Jewish organizations and was instrumental in the formation of the Jewish Community Center and Child Development Center at Congregation Beth Israel. He was also passionate about his involvement with The Circle of Friends Alzheimer’s Group. He was preceded in death on May 3, 2007 by his wife of over 60 years, Louise. He is survived by his four children, his son Jerry Samuelson and his wife Jimmie, their children Brett and Billie Samuelson and Darren and Becky Samuelson and their seven grandchildren; his daughter Becky Newberry and her husband David, their children Lindsey and Tom Macomber, Eliot and Amy Levin and their three grandchildren; his daughter Debbie Pearson and her husband Hank, their three children Denise and Frank Hart, Brandon and Deborah Ginsburg, Kevin and Cherise Ginsburg, and their eight grandchildren; his son Aric Samuelson and his wife Pam, their children Sam, Nathan and Jacob Samuelson. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Congregation Beth Israel’s “Circle of Friends.” Services will be held at 2pm on Wednesday August 25th at Congregation Beth Israel, 3901 Shoal Creek Blvd, Austin, Texas.
