

Ira Wilma “Mam-Maw” Cherry, 96, joined her husband in heaven peacefully on the morning of August 6, 2016 thanks to the amazing care givers at Park Valley Inn Nursing Home and Altus Hospice. Mam-Maw was born to Ira and Rachel Watford on January 28, 1920 in Georgiana, Alabama. She was the youngest of four daughters and two sons. She married Merdy Earl “Gran” Cherry in June of 1941 and had two children. Their son, Robert is retired from the United States Air Force and lives in Georgia, with his wife, Pam. Their daughter, Judy, retired from the IRS and lived in Elgin for 27 years with her husband, Randall L. McCann. Mam-Maw retired with Gran from The United States Air Force in 1967 and settled in Austin, Texas. Survivors include her son, Robert Cherry and his wife Pam; seven grandchildren, Tracye Jones, Cherry Lynch, Robb Cherry, James McCann, Clif Lynch, Jeff Cherry and Greg Cherry and five great grandchildren. She had three sisters, Lucy, Eula May and Annie Clyde and two brothers Elijah and Sam who all preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Merdy Earl Cherry, her daughter Judy Cherry Lynch McCann, and son-in-law Robert Clifton Lynch.
Mam-Maw was the HEART of her family. She cherished every moment with them and they in turn adored her. She was extremely honored to be recognized as the oldest living member of the Welcome Baptist Church in McKenzie, Alabama where she was presented with a special one-of-a-kind cross. She will be remembered for her amazing kindness, positive and gentle spirit, and most of all her loving and beautiful smile. We love you Mam-Maw, Oh Yes We Do!
The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., Monday, August 8, 2016 at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be at 1:00 P.M., Tuesday, August 9, 2016 in the Chapel of Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home with Rev. Jonathan Bergman officiating. Interment will follow at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Memorial Park.
