Rev. Ira Shields was born on January 8, 1942 in Ledbetter, Texas, to Daisy Mae Rucker Roscoe and Woodrow Shields. He was lovingly raised by his grandmother, Eliza Floyd, who instilled in him strong Christian values that shaped the course of his life. At an early age, he accepted Christ and was baptized. In time, he embraced his calling to ministry and was later ordained to preach the Gospel.
Rev. Shields graduated from Giddings High School in 1960. Shortly after, he married the love of his life, Helen Faye Wade, and together they shared 63 years of devoted marriage. He was a committed husband and father, always striving to provide a better life for his family.
Dedicated to advancing his skills, he attended night school where he received his HVAC Air Conditioning Repair License/Certification. He went on to work for University of Austin Texas/Balconies Research, faithfully serving for 35 years before retiring. Continuing his pursuit of spiritual growth, he attended Austin Baptist Bible Academy, proudly graduating on May 9, 1997.
An entrepreneur at heart, his early ventures included work in real estate and air conditioning/refrigeration services, and he later became the owner of Snow Cone Delight.
In his spare time, Rev. Shields enjoyed the simple pleasures of life—spending time with family, fishing, kitting, reading, and playing the guitar.
Prior to his transition, he was a faithful member of New Light Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, where he preached the Word, served faithfully, and joyfully sang in the choir.
Rev. Ira Shields transitioned from this life on January 25, 2026. He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Helen; his children, Phyllis Garnett (Donald), Monterra, Deborah and Michael Shields; and his sisters, Wanda McCarthy (Earl) and Terry Johnson (Tommie). He was preceded in death by his sister, Brenda Shields.
He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Burundi (Taylor), Gabrielle, Harvey, Donald II and Jalen; a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, extended family members, and many dear friends.
