Irene Coyne, a native of New Braunfels, TX, died at the age of 97 in Apache Junction, AZ where she resided for the past 12 years. Irene was born August 24, 1915 to Isidore (Fritz) Schumann and his wife Ophelia (Nowotny) Schumann. Irene graduated from Seton School of Nursing in Austin, TX around 1940. On April 14, 1941 she married Joseph Brian Coyne in Austin, TX where he was a journalist for the Austin American-Statesman. They later moved to Arkansas City, KS where Brian was the managing editor for the Traveler and where she was employed as a nurse for the Arkansas City Memorial Hospital. Irene served as a nurse in the Peace Corps in Karatina, Kenya in 1976 and 1977. After traveling most of the world she returned to work at the hospital in Arkansas City and retired in 1995.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Melba Tekla Schumann and Mary Ann Schumann, and a brother, Norbert Schumann.
She is survived by two daughters, Katie Littleton and her husband, James, of Victoria, Texas, Mary Ann Coyne of Apache Junction, Arizona; two sons, Brian Coyne and his wife, Blanca, of Houston, and James Coyne and his wife, Rhonda, of Winfield, Kansas; 9 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, a niece and nephew and two great-nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at eleven o’clock in the morning on Wednesday, the 26th of December, at St. Austin Catholic Church, 2026 Guadalupe Street, Austin, Texas. Interment will follow in Austin Memorial Park.
