Iris Jane Barahona was born on a rainy Wednesday afternoon at 12:30pm on September 9 2020. We named her this beautiful name due to it meaning “God’s gracious rainbow”. Iris was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome and she had a variant of Shone’s complex, all this means that the left side of her heart was smaller than normal. After her birth she was quickly taken to Dell children’s medical center for observation and she would end up needing her first heart surgery at one week old. Iris was such an incredible warrior, she faced all her challenges with a smile on her face. Iris had the most amazing dark brown hair which she always wore as a mohawk. She was famous among her cardiac unit for her hair and for her infectious smile. Iris would later require a second and a third rather quickly heart surgery. If anyone deserved the title of a warrior, it was Iris she was the very definition of a warrior she took all the obstacles and doubts people had about her and proved everyone wrong time and time again. Iris loved people very much, she was a social butterfly from the moment she was born, if anyone would walk passed her room they would NEED to come in and say a quick hello to her or she would cry and cry till she got her heart’s desire. Iris was very blessed to meet so many wonderful people in her short little life but I believe that she lived countless lives in her short 4 months. Iris got the opportunity to make friends with other children, she celebrated the holidays with her father and I and my Iris even had a boyfriend!. Iris like many other children loved music, and television; her favorite things to watch we Disney movies and cooking shows. Iris had a cardiac episode on January 9th and was placed on life support for 4 days and was eventually removed due to her heart beating strong enough to not need it anymore. Iris was placed on the heart transplant list in hopes that a new heart will cure her body but as the days went on. We slowly came to the realization that Iris could not wait till a new heart was available for me, the medication was no longer working and the effects of her cardiac episode were more and more present so her father and I came to the decision to say goodbye to our beautiful little girl so on January 21st we held our little Iris for the final time and at 8am Iris Jane passed away in my arms. Iris was the light of our world and the very reason we found strength to continue when things looked impossible. Iris was our angle, she was truly a blessing for our family and we will do whatever it takes to make sure she is always proud of us. This is not a goodbye for our family because we know that Iris is always around us, Iris is in everything that is beautiful and pure in this world and in the next.
The family will receive friends during a visitation on Wednesday, January 27, 2021, from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Cook-Walden Forest Oaks Funeral Home. A rosary will begin at noon. The Rite of Committal will take place at 1 p.m. at Cook-Walden Forest Oaks Cemetery.
