Our matriarch was born Maria Isabel Requejo on Nov. 5, 1933 at the Davis Ranch in Menchaca/ Austin, Texas. She was the eldest daughter of Manuel Requejo and Elena Zapata Requejo. Isabel's childhood consisted of country living, outings with extended family, music, and hard work on the farm.
The family trekked to Wisconsin, Nebraska and throughout Texas as field laborers. For well deserved entertainment, their father would take them to various events and festivals where he played his accordian. There, Isabel developed her love of music and dance. Young Isabel had a sweet nature, was very honest and loved to sketch, draw, paint and embroider. These traits helped her later in life when she went into sales. She become an excellent saleswoman and was trusted and well liked by all.
Sadly, in 1948 her father unexpectedly passed away and she put her studies aside to help her mother and older brothers care for her six younger siblings. She held many cherished memories of her father and spoke of him often to her family to keep his memory alive.
Isabel had many different jobs throughout her life, from companion to the Davis family, elevator operator at the famous Stephen F. Austin hotel (where she met our father), housekeeper, and cannery assembly worker. She was also a salesperson for J.C. Penney, Stanley Home products, Home Interiors, Inc., and Princess House, Inc. She thrived and won many complimentary trips, but always chose Dallas, Texas as her destination so she could also visit her siblings and extended family throughout Texas.
Isabel married Rosendo L. Garcia on April 28, 1956. They had five children and were married for sixty seven years. They spent sixty of those years in San Jose, California.
Isabel was an exemplary mother. She made every holiday and birthday a special occasion for each child. She started the tradition of making special Easter baskets, Christmas stockings and dinners for each child and grandchild. She took joy in hosting a Posada and two family reunions for her family and invited them to her and Rosendo's ranch often. She loved to be around her family.
Isabel is survived by: children Diane Soberanes, Sylvia Roman, Laura Garcia, John (Myra) Garcia, Nick (Elissa) Garcia; grandchildren Melissa Roman,(Chad Goodman), Daniel Roman, Joshua Garcia, Nicole Alameda, Manuel Garcia, Andrew Garcia, Sierrah Coit; great-grandchildren, Aaron Roman, Christopher Roman, Daniel J.
