Ivy May Ostby Hjornevik, 92, was born to Martin and Isabella Ostby on March 2, 1926 in Fargo, North Dakota, and peacefully passed away on Friday, January 4, 2019 surrounded by her family.

Ivy graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics from North Dakota State University. Wesley Hjornevik was Ivy’s childhood newspaper boy and when he returned from WWII they were married in 1947. Wes and Ivy moved to Virginia and had 5 boys, Dale, David, Daniel, Douglas and D’Quincey.

Wes was in on the creation of NASA and the family moved to Dickinson, Texas near the Manned Space Center. Ivy was elected to the schoolboard of the Dickinson Independent School District at the time of school integration. She was also a scout den mother to 3 of their boys. After the moon landing, the family moved to Reston, Virginia. Later, Wes and Ivy retired to Austin, Texas (Rocking Chair Ranch). Here in Austin they joined the Armadillo Sam’s Camping Club. Ivy worked for a time at the IRS while her boys were still in college. She and Wes were members and officers of the Austin Gem and Mineral Society. After Wes passed away in 2000, Ivy continued to be active in the AGMS. She joined a quilting club and volunteered at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. She was a member of the Driftwood United Methodist Church. And on Friday nights she played cards with the girls in the ‘hood'.

Ivy was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her brother, Martin Ostby, and her sons, Dale and David. She is survived by her sister, June Beaton and husband Walter, sons, Daniel and his wife Glenda, Douglas and his wife Vicki, and D’Quincey and his wife Pamela and daughter-in-law Betty Cuculic and husband Mark. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Tiffany Baker, Zach Hjornevik, Xan Hjornevik, Ivy Hjornevik, Kelsey Hjornevik, Kirk Hjornevik, Melissa Swan, Eleanor Smith, George Smith and James Smith and 5 great-grandchildren, Hayden Hjornevik, Kinley Baker, Riley Hjornevik, Avery Baker and Kyle Baker.

A Celebration of Ivy's Life will be at 1:00 P.M., Saturday, January 12, 2019 in the Chapel of Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home with Rev. Carl Clark officiating. Honoring Ivy as pallbearers will be Daniel Hjornevik, Douglas Hjornevik, D’Quincey Hjornevik, Zach Hjornevik, Kirk Hjornevik, Xan Hjornevik, Brandon Baker, George Smith, James Smith and Alexx Bond.
