Jack was born June 3, 1920 to Arthur Calvin, Sr. and Florence Allen Bible. He was reared on the farm at Leander, where he also went to school. He volunteered for military service in 1939, serving in the U.S. Navy until 1945. Jack served as a Fire Controlman on the U.S.S. Erie, a gun boat in the Panama Canal which was torpedoed and sunk. He then served on the U.S.S. Bunker Hill, a carrier, until 1944. In September of 1945 he reported to the U.S.S. La Vallette where he was honorably discharged. During the war, Jack participated in many naval engagements in the South Pacific such as Marianas, Truk, Palau, Marshalls, Gilberts, Mindanao and the Philippines. He was so proud to serve his country.
Jack was an active member of Crestview United Methodist Church for over 50 years where he served in many capacities. In retirement, he enjoyed participating in Double 5’s, the Wednesday morning breakfast group, the Methodist Men, his every day coffee buddies, his group of “doughnut” friends, and his breakfast pal. He was also active in the Crestview Neighborhood Association.
Jack married Johanna in 1944. In married life he lived in Austin where he was an electrician for 25 years. He then served as building superintendant for the City National Bank for 18 years. He was a family man, teaching his three sons how to play baseball, fish and hunt. One of the greatest gifts a man can give his children is to love their mother – and this is what he did. He was so proud that he had instilled in each of the boys honesty, high morals, good work ethics and integrity – teaching each one to help others and to be good citizens. He had a great love for all of his family.
Jack is survived by his dear wife of 67 years and caregiver, Johanna Bible; sons, and their wives, Thomas and Cathy of Georgetown, Gary and Linda of Liberty Hill, and Keith and Beth of Austin; grandchildren and spouses, Scott and Jodie Bible of San Antonio, Leslie and Robert Lee of Leander, Kelly and Brian Castleberry of Georgetown, and David and Tanna Bible of Tyler; great-grandchildren, Jessica, Jaymee, Jackie, Meagan, Madelyn, Ashlee, Jack, and Sterling. Surviving siblings are A.C. Bible, Jr. of Leander, James Roy Bible of Elgin, Lou Emma Thomas of Aransas Pass and Laura Nell Schwartz of Elgin.
