James Elbert Hixson III (Jim), aged 85, passed away on Wednesday, October 8, 2026. Jim was preceded in death by his daughter, Stephanie Hixson, and his wife of 63 years, Edith Hixson. He is survived by his son, Kevin, his wife Sandra and their three boys, Conner, Colton, and Caden.
Jim was born and raised in Lake Charles, Louisiana and lived there most of his life. He was the second child of James Jr. and Ward Ella. The first being his older sister, Ward Ella Turner, followed by two younger brothers, Harry Milton Hixson and Arthur Wallace Hixson.
After graduating from Lake Charles High School, Jim attended Baylor University where he obtained a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. It was during the summer break of 1961 that he eventually met and married Edith Louise Karr. Jim and Edie were married September 1st, 1962. After getting married, they moved back to Waco, where Jim finished his senior year. Shortly thereafter, Jim and Edie moved to Dallas, Texas so Jim could attend mortuary school. After Jim finished mortuary school, they returned to Lake Charles where he began to work at Hixson Funeral Home. On January 17th, 1967, their family grew to include their son, Kevin Edmond Hixson. Approximately two and a half years later their family grew again with the birth of their daughter Stephanie Camille Hixson on October 11th, 1969.
Over the subsequent years, Jim worked at the Hixson Funeral Home. He eventually became one of the managing partners. Jim eventually retired from the funeral home in 1982.
Jim had several passions in his life. The first was his family and his church, First Baptist Church of Lake Charles. Over the years of attending FBC, he served as a deacon and on various leadership committees. While growing up, he and James Jr. would go to the Indianapolis 500. This was still a recent topic of conversation that he enjoyed. After leaving the funeral home, Jim’s new passion became investing. He began to read and learn about various investing theories and strategies and enjoyed it immensely.
After Hurricane Laura, Jim, Edie, and Stephanie were forced to move to Round Rock, Texas, having lost their home to the storm. Over the following 6-plus years, Jim began to suffer from severe vascular dementia. Ultimately, it was this condition that eventually ended his life. Today, we celebrate the fact that he is no longer suffering and has laid claim to the promise made to him by his Saviour, Jesus Christ.
