James Gregg Vier

surrounded by his family. He was born on January 9, 1943, in Baldwin, Wisconsin, the son of

Arnold James Vier and Evaline Gregerson Vier. The family moved to Hudson, Wisconsin where

he spent his formative years.

Jim was honest, hardworking, generous, and had a witty sense of humor. He enjoyed water

sports, bird hunting and watching UT games with his family and friends. His four grandchildren

called him "Poppy" and he delighted in spending time with them, reading bedtime stories,

playing games, or driving the golf cart with them.

Jim was passionate about his many hobbies, a perfectionist in all he undertook. He crafted

beautiful cradles and rocking horses for his grandchildren. He constructed and flew intricate

radio-controlled model airplanes. He carved spectacular wooden birds, each a work of art. He

took piano lessons and played the piano every morning. Many will remember Jim's passion for

restoring classic British sports cars from the late ’50 and early 60’s.

Jim received a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology from the University of Wisconsin-

Stout in 1966. He was a member of Sigma Tau Gamma-Alpha Kappa Chapter, where he made

many lifelong friends. It was at Stout he met Jeanne Bordini. They were married in July of 1967

and moved to Austin, where he was stationed at Bergstrom Air Force Base as an Air Craft

Maintenance Officer. After his military service, he pursued a Master of Science in Community

and Regional Planning from The University of Texas at Austin. During graduate school he worked

in the Governor’s Office for Community Planning, producing plans for small towns in Texas. He

also worked for the Coastal Bend Council of Governments in Corpus Christi, Texas.

In the early 70’s, Jim worked with Lumbermen’s Investment Corporation as head of Land

Development and later created his own development company. Among his most notable

projects were Onion Creek Country Club, Anderson Mill, Buttercup Creek and The Woods of

Lake Travis. Abundant trees, parks, hike & bike trails, schools and commercial sites were

hallmarks of his developments. Jim’s planning expertise and civic spirit led him to serve on the

City of Austin Planning Commission, the Travis County Grand Jury and The University of

Wisconsin-Stout Foundation in Menomonie, Wisconsin. In his spare time, he was a loyal and

contributing member of the Hill Country Aeromodelers Club of Austin, building the existing

airstrip for RC model plane enthusiasts at Mary Moore Searight Metropolitan Park.

Jim was predeceased by his parents, Evaline and Arnold Vier. He is survived by his wife of 56

years, Jeanne Bordini Vier and their children, J. Gregg Vier, Jr. (Julie), Bradford Vier (Jennifer).

He will forever be remembered by his grandchildren, Evan, Grayson, Elise, and Stellan. Jim is

also survived by his sisters, Judee Ferguson (Charles) and Nancy Gilbert (Doug) and his many

nieces, nephews and cousins.

Honoring his wishes, the family will hold a private interment. The Reverend Father Charles R.

Kullmann, St. Austin’s Catholic Church will officiate. The family invites friends to celebrate Jim

on Wednesday, January 17 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm at Tarry House, 3006 Bowman Avenue, Austin,

Texas 78703.
