Janet Lee Jones, 92, of Buda, TX died peacefully on September 21, 2026, surrounded by her five daughters. Janet was born in October of 1933 in Akron, Ohio to Inez and John Isley. Growing up during World War II, she told many stories about what life was like during that time.
Janet attended Edison High School in Miami, FL. While in high school she met her future husband, George, on a blind date on Halloween night. They were married a year later on November 1, 1950. Janet gave birth to five beautiful girls during their first eight years of marriage. She and George were stationed across the country during his 30 years in the Navy. When George deployed on Naval cruises (sometimes for 8-10 months) Janet became the sole parent, taking over all caretaking responsibilities.
As a talented seamstress, Janet enjoyed sewing all her daughters' clothes, as well as her own. She took the time to make the girls matching outfits as well as beautiful, smocked dresses. As her girls grew up, she taught them to sew, with each one getting their own sewing machine. She also taught them to cook and bake, especially pies.
Though Janet worked many jobs over the years, her final and favorite was as a legal secretary in Tampa, FL for the Department of Justice. In retirement, she enjoyed golfing with her husband and playing cards with friends. In her later years, she took up knitting and crocheting, making hats and stuffed animals to give away to others.
Janet also loved jigsaw puzzles and playing spades with her daughters. She was an avid reader and enjoyed nonfiction novels about women in the Bible. She looked forward to Sunday worship each week and was excited to see her sisters in Christ. Most Sundays, before or after worship services, you would find her perusing the books in the church library. She always dressed in style and never left the house without earrings, a necklace, and her lipstick on. Her nails were always manicured and sparkly.
Affectionately known as “Gigi,” Janet was frequently visited and cared for by her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was so loved by so many.
She is preceded in death by her husband George, her sisters Mary and Ginny, her brother Chandler, and her granddaughter April Lester.
She is survived by her five daughters: Sara Taylor (and husband Mickey Taylor), Mary Lynn Hall, Becky Perez (and husband Robert Perez), Bobbie Reed (and husband Keith Reed), and Sharon Powell, 15 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren.
Services for Janet will be on October 24th at Hays Hills Baptist Church in Buda, Texas. The viewing will be from 10-11 am; service will immediately follow at 11 am. A luncheon will be held in the fellowship hall for family and out of town guests following the service.
Janet will be laid to rest at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas with her beloved husband George. Interment will be held at a later date and will be attended by immediate family.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
