

Dr. Janet Anne Meisel passed away Thursday April 30th after a short illness. She was born in Dallas Texas on January 30, 1944. Dr. Meisel was an Associate Professor of Medieval English history at the University of Texas at Austin for 34 years. She attended the Hockaday School in Dallas, Oberlin College and received her doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Meisel is survived by her brother and sister-in-law Robert and Carol Meisel, her niece, Katherine Anne Meisel, nephew Christopher Duncan Meisel. She was extremely proud of Duncan and Katie and enjoyed seeing them grow into committed and responsible adults. We will all miss her. Dr. Meisel was a member of Medieval Academy of America and the American Historical Association. Janet had a passion for and a commitment to teaching. She received a number of awards for teaching excellence, including the UT President's Associates Teaching Excellence Award. She had high expectations of her students and expected the same of herself. Dr. Meisel requested that anyone wanting to make a gesture on her behalf make donations to any reputable wildlife fund, the ASPCA or the AIDS organization of your choice. A gathering to celebrate and remember our time with Jan will be held on Wednesday, May 20, 2009.
