Janette was born in Austin on March 11, 1931 to George and Winifred Callan. She grew up in west Austin, and spent time at all the old Austin landmarks such as Deep Eddy pool, Zilker Park and old Austin High. At the age of 17, Janette met Leroy Carlson and fell in love. After a brief courtship, they married on April 9, 1949. Janette and Leroy’s proudest accomplishments were their four children, eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The couple had many wonderful friends and they loved to socialize. As the children got older, they knew the rule was to be home before mom and dad! Until knee surgery prevented it, Janette enjoyed women’s bowling on Thursday’s at Westgate Lanes. Her Thursday’s were later filled by playing Forty-Two at the Buda Senior Citizen’s Center. On Friday nights she could be found at the Manchaca Fire Hall playing canasta with the wives while the husbands played Moon. Janette was always quick with the practical jokes. On the rare occasion it snowed, she would make snow balls, drive around town and throw them at unsuspecting citizens!
Janette was preceded in death by her parents; her adored husband, Leroy; her brother, George Callan, Jr.; and her sister, Katherine Swenson.
She is survived by her children, Mike Carlson (Carla), Diana Pannell (Guy), Larry Carlson (Lou Ann), Lisa Goll (David), and son by choice, Dave Hill; grandchildren, Christi Dault (Donnie), Kelley Gonzales (Casey), Lindsay Pannell, Cullen, Tyler and Kendall Carlson, and Heather and Kasey Goll; and great-grandchildren, Tucker, Willie and Emma Dault and Casey Allen, Trey, Anthony, Michael and Ryan. She is also survived by her brother, Dan Callan (Katherine), sister-in-law, Rachel Callan; brother-in-law, Leonard Carlson; and sister-in-law, Ethel Myers; cousin, Zelma Haile; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.
The family would like to express sincere gratitude to Dave Hill for the love and special care he gave Janette during her illness.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in honor of Janette to the Ronald McDonald House; or to the Soldier’s Kids Involved In Fly Fishing (SKIFF) through Fort Hood in Killeen.
