Fifth generation Austinite from the Robinson and Bremond clans, Scooter Umstattd was born on July 24, 1928 in Austin, Texas at Seton Hospital. She was the daughter of C. Aubrey Smith, PhD and Mary Louise Robinson Smith. The family first settled in a cottage on Hemphill Pkwy. in Austin, TX. When Scooter was a small child, they moved to Washington, D.C., where Scooter’s dad helped to establish the SEC. Following Washington, the family lived for a year in Houston, finally settling on Wooldridge Drive, Austin, TX. Scooter attended University Junior High, Austin High, and the University of Texas, where she studied business and was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. On July 5, 1947, she married “the boy up the street,” Robert (Bob) Greenleaf Umstattd (1927-2000). The newlyweds moved to Philadelphia while Bob completed medical school. Following graduation they lived in Dallas, San Francisco, Austin, Hanover, NH, Dallas again, then three different homes in Austin. These years were among Scooter’s fondest memories as she and Bob welcomed the births of their four children.
Scooter is preceded in death by the love of her life, Bob Umstattd. She is survived by her brother C. Aubrey Smith, Jr; sons: Bob Umstattd and wife Michelle of Liberty Hill, Jimmy Umstattd and wife Mary Ellen of Westlake Hills, Tom Umstattd and wife Ginger of Austin, and daughter Madelaine Morris and husband Jim of Houston; 14 grandchildren: Renee Umstattd Meyer (Andy), Laura Umstattd Lester (Bryan), Sarah Umstattd Hammit (Dustin), Christian Umstattd (Sidney), Janey Umstattd, Erik Umstattd, Thomas Umstattd, Jr. (Margaret), Cynthia Umstattd, David Umstattd, William Umstattd, John Umstattd, Doug Madeley (Lacey), Michael Madeley, and Katherine Madeley Gautreaux (Andre); and 18 great-grandchildren; nieces: Alycia Smith Wootten and Mary Smith, nephew C. Aubrey Smith, III; and two great-nieces, Samantha & Harleigh Wootten. Scooter loved all these more than any sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt ever could, and kept in touch with all and adored each one.
Scooter treasured family reunions at the beach and worldwide travels. She also loved singing the old cowboy songs together with the entire family and thrived on being an exceptional conversationalist. Those fortunate to chat with Scooter over the years benefited from her unique wit, wisdom, and life lessons. Despite a small stature, her presence filled any room. Scooter played tennis at Westwood Country Club for 40 years and helped her husband, Bob run the Liberty Hill RU Ranch since 1981. Throughout her life she was active within the Church of the Good Shepherd, the Junior League of Austin, Rotarians of Austin, Austin Garden Club, ESU, the Austin Symphony and was a charter member of the Austin Opera Guild, as well as a contributor to St. David’s and other various local hospital charities. While her husband Bob was alive, they both volunteered with Recording for the Blind and AIDS of Austin.
Scooter was the epitome of a strong and impactful woman whose legacy and selfless love of family and friends will live mightily throughout generations to come.
Being married to Bob for 52 years, they now enjoy Valentine’s Day with Jesus their Savior in heaven.
