Jesse Ortegon Sr.

Jesse A. Ortegon, Sr. entered eternal rest on September 16, 2026. He was a longtime native Austinite and was 83 years old. He courageously battled a long-term illness until the very end. He will be greatly missed by those who loved him dearly, were by his bedside, and cared for him.

Jesse was born October 23, 1942 to parents Andrew Ortegon and Celia Arredondo Ortegon. He attended Johnston High School in Austin.

Jesse served in the US Army as a cook in Germany and was proud to serve his country. He served alongside Sensei Joe Alvarado and was an accomplished Soryu Karate instructor in the early seventies, earning three black belts. Jesse was a custom home builder and built many homes in and around Austin, Texas. He also worked as a taxidermist for Martinez Taxidermist in South Austin.

He was an avid gardener and grew some of the most magnificent, fragrant roses. He enjoyed fishing and dove hunting with family and friends.

He married his love of life, Tommie Luna, in April of 2006 and was a loving caregiver to her, who passed away in May 2017.

Jesse is preceded in death by his father, Andrew Ortegon; Mother, Celia Arrendondo Ortegon; Brother, Sabastian Ortegon; and Sister, Maria (Lupe) Ortegon, Daughter; Jessica Ortegon Black.

Jesse is survived by his brother, Frank A. Ortegon; sister, Susie Botello; children, Tommy G. Ortegon, Jesse A. Ortegon, Jr.; stepchildren, Amy Cervantez, Diane Sorrells, Tina Lopez, Gregory Cadena; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family wants to acknowledge the care provided by Suncrest Hospice, as well as the nurses and case workers. He also received exceptional care from the staff at the Onion Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
