She spent her early years with her family in the rural areas of Taylor, Texas where her Dad worked as a sharecropper. She attended school at O.L. Price High School where she graduated in 1960. After high school, she moved with her Aunt to the Austin area.
Jewel and Lois Demps were blessed with a son, Efrem Demps, whom they adored. She later married Professor Spencer. Jewel and Professor were together for many years and later became proud parents to their daughter, Brandi.
Jewel found joy in her hobbies, including solving crossword puzzles, interior decorating, organizing, and collecting unique trinkets.
In her professional endeavors, Jewel was employed with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, earning the respect and admiration of her colleagues as well as a merit award recognizing her commitment to her duties. She retired from the VA after many years of dedicated service.
Jewel later relocated to Houston, Texas to be near her daughter. She spent her remaining years engulfed in her hobbies and friends. Jewel was a compassionate friend who enjoyed days full of long conversations, fellowship, and listening to gospel music. She especially loved watching game shows in her favorite recliner. Her deep spirituality and unwavering faith were evident to all who knew her.
Jewel had an extensive collection of butterflies and butterfly-themed memorabilia. Butterflies have long symbolized transformation and hope. She embodied hope, a powerful and nurturing sentiment, and lived a life full of that same hope, love, and faith.
Jewel departed this earthly life on July 3, 2024, surrounded by community, friends, and family.
Jewel was preceded in death by her parents Lenora and Roy Jacobs, her son Efrem Demps, and brother Richard Jacobs.
She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter Brandi L. Spencer; loving companion Robert Gray; sisters Barbara Thompson, Charlotte Maxwell (Dennis), Emma Jacobs, and Roye Reeves (Gregg) and brothers Bruce Jacobs (Sharon), James Jacobs, Searcy Jacobs (Etta); nieces and nephews Barry, Bruce Jr., Dale, Isaac, James, Jeremy, John, La'Shauna, Searcy Jr., Tamra, Trekeshelia, and a host of great-nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
