Joan Dolores Figlan

Joan Dolores Figlan (nee Vasley) peacefully passed away Sunday July 28th, 2024 in her home in Austin, Texas. She leaves behind three children: Matthew, Alicia and Tracy; granddaughter Megan and son-in-law Gary. Joan was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 71 years, John Adam Figlan, parents Theresa Vasley (nee Zielinski) and Joseph Vasley. Joan was born on November 17th, 1930, in Detroit, Michigan. Joan met John while in high school. After graduating high school, she married her best friend in 1951.

Due to her husband’s work, Joan moved several times. First move: Detroit to Vestal NY. While at Vestal, Joan became good friends with the neighbors on David Avenue. What did that mean? Well, to us children (and all children on David Avenue and a few of the other streets in this subdivision), it meant if you got hurt, got in trouble or did something bad, the neighborhood mom phone tree would be activated. By the time you got home, your mom already knew the story. It also meant there were numerous get-togethers for the children and the parents. Joan was an active member of the community, which included school and/or after school events/groups or with the church. She enjoyed bowling and from what I remember, she was very good. She spent time with her children showing them how to bowl, crochet, sew, bake, cook etc.

Joan was from Polish descent and enjoyed cooking and baking goodies from her Polish cook book. This cookbook was one of her prized possessions; no one dared borrow the cookbook without asking her first.

After 12ish years in Vestal, the final destination: Austin, TX. Joan continued to make friends, support her husband and children and participate in church activities to include her husband’s Bible study class. Joan was also a devoted Catholic.

Joan’s smile, laughter and hugs will be missed by many. She always made you feel welcomed and loved. She will be missed but never forgotten.
