Joan Lykins

She was the cherished only child of Mildred and Moody Sundberg. Joan was a native Austinite who attended John B Winn Elementary School, University Junior High and Austin High School. At age 15, she met her future husband, Al at the Checker Front Grocery Store. After a delightful courtship, they were engaged on her 16th birthday. A beautiful, all white wedding was held at the First Evangelical Free Church on Thursday evening, March 22, 1951. The newlyweds honeymooned at Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. The couple settled in a new home on Chesterfield in Austin. In December 1952, a daughter was born into the family and in March 1957, a son joined the family. Family was very important to her. She was an immaculate homemaker and was also an excellent cook who loved to bring joy to her family with delicious meals. In January 1972, she became a grandmother for the first time; a granddaughter whom she cherished and adored was born. Then in July 1977, a grandson was born whom she loved and was so proud of.

Joan was a lifetime member of the First Evangelical Free Church. She was very active in her church, serving in many different capacities over the years. Her latest endeavor was Touch Global, a ministry of a missionary nature that she was the coordinator for.

She was blessed with 7 great- grandchildren, 5 great-granddaughters and 2 great-grandsons that came into her life. Her joy was to buy gifts for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Al Lykins; daughter, Cheryl Milligan and spouse, Stan; son, Gary Lykins and spouse, Sharon; granddaughter, Tamra Bean and spouse, Jerry; grandson, Duane Milligan and spouse, Erin; and 7 great-grandchildren. She was dearly loved by her family and friends and will be greatly missed.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from six o’clock in the evening until eight o’clock in the evening on Friday, the 25th of February at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N. Lamar Blvd.

Funeral Services will be held at two o’clock in the afternoon, Saturday, the 26th of February at the First Evangelical Free Church 4220 Monterey Oaks Blvd, Austin 78749. Interment will follow at Austin Memorial Park.
