

Joan Spencer Wilkes, 78, passed away on July 16, 2006. She was born on March 18, 1928 in Hester, Oklahoma to Kate and Lawrence Spencer. The family moved to Lamesa, Texas in 1933. Joan attended Lamesa Public Schools and graduated from Lamesa High School in 1945. She attended Texas Tech University and Abilene Christian College. On November 2, 1946 she married Garvin Clark Wilkes. Joan and Garvin resided in Lamesa with their family until relocating to Abilene in 1965. After the death of their daughter, JoJane, the family moved to Austin in 1972. Joan was a lifelong member of the Baptist Faith and a member of the First Baptist Church in Austin where she worked for a number of years in the church nursery. She worked as Financial Secretary for St. Davids Episcopal Church and later became bookkeeper for The Next to New Shop. She retired from The Next to New Shop in 1989. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, William L. Spencer, her sister, Retha Spencer Orr and her daughter, JoJane Wilkes. She is survived by her beloved husband of 59 years, Garvin C. Wilkes of Austin, daughters Kim Chance (Curtis) of San Francisco, CA and Kelli (Gary) Dailey of Dripping Springs. Other survivors include 4 grandchildren, Chris Chance (Acacia) of Woodbury, MN, Melanie Chance of Westminster, CO, Kate Dailey of Stephenville and Natalie Dailey of Dripping Springs and 2 great grandchildren, Connor and McKenzie Chance of Woodbury, MN. The family will receive friends at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 19, 2006 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Services will be held in Austin at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home on Thursday, July 20, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. with Dr. Doug Keenan of First Baptist Church officiating. Graveside services will be held at Lamesa Memorial Park in Lamesa on Friday, July 21, 2006 at 4:00 p.m. with Reverend Gerald Parsons officiating. The family would like to thank Dr. Ace Alsup and nurse, Barbara for their care and support over the years. They would also like to thank the staff of Hospice Austin, and especially nurses Carol Taylor and Wade Hogue.
