Our beloved Joe “Bones” Ildefonso Garica, age 88, Austin Native, was called by our Heavenly Father on Sunday March 17, 2024. He was lovingly surrounded by family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ildefonso, and Vivian Garcia; his brother Luis Garcia; and his father and mother-in-law Manuel and Lupe Sifuentes.
Born in Austin, Texas on December 14th, 1935. He attended Austin Schools. After marrying his sweetheart, Margaret Garcia, he joined the National Guard and then started his career of with the Austin American Statesman for 55 years while raising his family.
He dedicated his life to his family and enjoyed every minute of loving his grandchildren. He was a longtime Austin Hispanic Fastpitch Advocate. He helped pave the way for the youth and minorities of his community with a gentle and touching soul to continue the love of fastpitch. He was honored and inducted into the Pan Am Softball Hall of Fame in 2021.
In retirement, he enjoyed his vacations from state to state, his monthly meetups with his brothers and sisters and not to mention his weekly breakfast with his longtime friends.
Joe found light and fulfillment in many aspects of his life. He celebrated Super Bowl 21yrs in Las Vegas. He loved the Texas Longhorns and the San Francisco 49er’s. He took pride in coaching his grandsons and then to go on watching his great grandchildren play sports or whatever their hearts desired. Any chance he got, you would find him enjoying the sounds of great music or reading the newspaper, all with a smile on his face.
Nothing in this world gave him more joy than the Legacy he has left behind. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Margaret Garcia; his beloved children, Joseph Garcia, Laura Fogle (David) and Rosanne Sepulveda (Mitchell). The Apple of his Eye Jennifer. Nine treasured grandchildren Jennifer Gomez, Jeremy Navarro, Joshua Navarro, Alejandro Hernandez, Nathan Hernandez, Joey Garcia, James Garcia, Samantha Garcia, Mitchell Jr. Sepulveda. Five step grandchildren, Thirteen great grandchildren and three special great nephews/grandsons: his sisters Frances, Falo, Sue, Lucy, Rosemary, Ramona, Martha, Liz, Patty and brothers David and Pete. As well as numerous nieces, nephews and other loving family and friends.
A visitation for Joe will be held Friday, March 22, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Weed Corley Fish Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 2620 South Congress Avenue, Austin, Texas 78704. A recitation of the holy rosary will occur Friday, March 22, 2024, from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM, 2620 South Congress Avenue, Austin, Texas 78704. A funeral service will occur Saturday, March 23, 2024, at 11:00 AM, 2620 South Congress Avenue, Austin, Texas 78704. A committal service will occur Saturday, March 23, 2024, at Onion Creek Memorial Park, 11610 Chapel Lane, Austin, Texas 78748.
The pallbearers will be his grandsons Jeremy Navarro, Joshua Navarro, Nathan Hernandez, Mitchell Jr Sepulveda, Joey Garcia, and James Garcia.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Jando Hernandez, Jacob Navarro, Jennifer Gomez and Sammi Garcia.
