

Joe Mack Scarborough III, 74, of Manchaca, Texas died peacefully December 22, 2009 of congestive heart failure. Born on November 3, 1935, in Harper, Texas he was the only son of James Mack Scarborough and Jettie Othelia Sageser Scarborough. He married his childhood sweetheart Lydia Fay Bierschwale on June 18, 1955. He worked for the Texas Highway Department for 30 years and retired in 1985. After retiring from the State he worked for Lichliter Jameson & Associates Inc. as a construction administrator for several years before joining his wife Lydia as an advisor for BCL Pavement Services, an airport contracting company. At the time of his death he was fully retired, enjoying his many hobbies, and his adorable pet poodle Pasha. He followed in his father's footsteps and joined the Masonic Order in 1957, Kerrville Lodge No. 697. Scottish Rite and Shrine in 1992. Joe led an adventurous life. He was a pilot, a fisherman and an avid hunter. Many of his hunting trophies were on display at his favorite gun shop McBrides in Austin, Texas. Joe enjoyed hunting in his home town of Harper, South Texas and Colorado. His most memorable hunts were in Canada for black bear. He was an excellent marksman and sportsman and taught those skills to many nephews and friends who now enjoy hunting and sharing their experiences with him. When he wasn't hunting he would "hang out" at McBrides or with friends at the Manchaca Fire Hall. He will best be remembered as the friend that would lend a helping hand as well as his great sense of humor. Joe was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 44 years Lydia Fay Scarborough, father James Mack Scarborough, mother Jettie Othelia Scarborough, and sister Rose Adele Habenicht. He is survived by his sister Peggy Fox of Harper, Texas and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews. The family will receive visitors from 3:00pm – 5:00pm on Sunday, December 27, 2009 at Weed Corley Fish Funeral Home at 2620 South Congress Avenue in Austin, Texas. Service will be held 1:00pm on Monday, December 28, 2009 at the Harper United Methodist Church, 23305 West US Highway 290 in Harper, Texas. Burial will follow in the Harper Cemetery.
