Joe Dean Womble

Joe Dean Womble was born in Healdton, Oklahoma as the fourth of five children to Joe and Lola Womble. In 1934 the family moved to Gladewater, Texas and Joe remained in Texas the rest of his life. He graduated from Gladewater High School at the age of 16 and then went to North Texas Agriculture College (now UT Arlington) majoring in pre-med. Drafted for the military at age 18 and served one and half years in the Army Air Force, mostly on Johnson Island as a cryptographer. After discharge went to UT Austin and was accepted to UT Medical School Galveston after three years pre-med.

Joe met his future wife, Gladys (Dean) Brittain, R.N. in 1950 and they were married January 27, 1951. Joe did his medical internship at Wichita Falls General Hospital and along with a classmate opened their family practice in Arlington, Texas in 1953. With Arlington's rapid growth the practice grew quickly and when he retired in 1993 the firm had four clinics and twenty-five physicians.

After retirement Joe and Dean traveled the world, including seven world cruises with shorter land and sea trips each year with family and friends. After living in Arlington for 54 years, Joe and Dean moved to Querencia, a retirement community in Austin, on November 1, 2007 to be closer to family and grandchildren.

Joe is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dean Womble, sons Mark Womble and wife Mary of Youngstown, Ohio; Steve Womble and his wife Beth, grandchildren Marshall and Paige of Austin, Texas; Scott Womble and his wife Deb and granddaughter Victoria of Ft. Worth, Texas and sister Doyce Maywald of Sulphur Springs, Texas. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Virginia Stracener and Syblene Dye, and brother Harold Womble.

The family would like to thank the Querencia staff for all their hard work and dedication to the residents. A private family memorial service will be held in the near future at Remembrance Gardens Austin, Texas.
