John Overton Burford was a man who embodied the spirit of Texas – steady, capable, and deeply devoted to his family. He had the soul of a cowboy, a trusted wisdom, and a sharp sense of humor that stayed with you long after he left the room. He was considered by his family to be a legend in the truest sense: someone you could count on without question, someone whose stories grew better with every telling, someone whose presence made life feel steadier. To many who loved him, he was simply “Johnny.” Johnny was the cornerstone of his family, always showing up with his time, rich passions, and a love as vast as the Texas sky for those who mattered most to him.
John was born in Fort Worth, Texas on July 12, 1940. He passed away on May 19, 2026 in Austin, Texas.
John was a sixth-generation Texan, his roots running deep in the state that he loved, tracing back to Aaron and Rachel Overton, who made their way to Tarrant County in 1848. His adoring parents were Conrad Overton Burford, Jr. and Betty Jane Vincent; and his beloved brother, Don Vincent Burford, all of whom have gone on before him.
John fell in love with horses as a young boy and always had a horse he loved. What started as a childhood dream of riding horses and becoming a cowboy eventually became the life he lived. He was a member and judge of the NCHA and former President of the Central Texas Cutting Horse Association. John was happiest around good horses and loved sharing that passion with his son, Bret. Together, they bred, raised, trained and showed some of the state's best cutting horses.
The true sparkle in John’s heart came from his family, with whom he loved beyond measure. He especially loved fishing for redfish and trout with his two daughters, Lisa and Kristi, on their annual Rockport trips. His love of being on the water grew from a hobby into something far more meaningful, carried through the generations of his family.
John attended Arlington Heights H.S. and graduated from Texas Tech with a BBA in Finance and an MBA in Economics, of which he was very proud. While at Texas Tech, he was a member and Treasurer of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and was President of Omicron Delta Epsilon, the honorary economics fraternity.
His lively business career included banking officer at Lubbock National Bank, Austin Savings & Loan, and Sr. Vice President at Texas Commerce Bank in Austin. John developed his first residential subdivision in Lubbock and participated in successfully developing over 100 projects throughout Lubbock, Austin, San Antonio and Houston. He especially enjoyed acquiring land and working with surveyors, engineers, utility contractors and home builders to see each project flourish. He was grateful for the opportunity to continue working as a consultant for Rob Tiemann at Blackhawk Subdivision in Pflugerville for more than twelve years, until he passed away.
John was deeply proud of his family and loved them all dearly. John is survived by his wonderful and treasured wife of 35 years, Janice, and their six children: Lisa Compton (Higdon), Kristi Vaught (Mark), Bret Burford (Electra), Jennifer Virden (Keith), Chris Zent and Mike Zent. Mike preceded him in death earlier this year.
He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren: Houston Bradley (Mary Ralph), Valerie Ahrens (Christian), Bradley Vaught (McKenzie), Cole Burford (Sydney), Gage Burford, Electra Burford, Christian Zent (Kyla), Camarie Weaver (Barret), Nick Virden (Marianna), Savannah Virden, as well as ten great-grandchildren.
John’s closest friends included Dennis Holt, Bob Clement, Rob Tiemann, Duane Blanchard, Wilson Moore and Pat McCombs.
Services to honor the life of John Burford will be held at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 5416 Parkcrest Drive, Austin, Texas, on Saturday, May 30, at 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to be made to Hospice Austin in honor of his life and legacy.
