

After serving in the Navy in World War II, he graduated from the University of New Mexico, married his college sweetheart, Beverly Odom, and started his new job at GMAC.
John and Beverly had four children and were married for 53 years. He climbed the corporate ladder at GMAC and after 39 years, he retired in Austin in 1989. After Beverly passed away, he married Sue Kinney. Sue and John traveled the world and had many wonderful years together.
John loved his family, he loved learning, and was especially fascinated with New Mexico history.
He was a devout man and attended St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Austin for many years.
John was preceded in death by his eight siblings and his beloved son, John Garland Burton. He is survived by his wife, Sue Burton; daughters, Blaine Stacy (Curley), of Houston, Texas, Amy Stillwell (Fred) of Marietta, Georgia, and Ann Burton of Marietta, Georgia, step children, Laura Wescott (Danny), Chad Kinney (Kim) and Shannon Harris (Tim), four granddaughters, four grandsons, and three great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, May 2, 2016 at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, 8134 Mesa Dr., Austin, Texas 78759 with Reverend Merrill Wade officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Matthews Episcopal Church or the charity of your choice.
