John McLendon was born in Natchez, Mississippi, on May 17, 1921 to Fredrick Conway McLendon and Lela Bunch McLendon. John's early years were in San Antonio, he then moved with the family to Austin in 1931. He professed his faith in Christ and was baptized at Congress Avenue Baptist Church in the mid 1930's. He married his wife, Imogene "Gene" Holland McLendon on November 24, 1945, after only two dates, which were separated by the 33 months he was away with the US Marine Corps in the South Pacific during World War II. As a member of the Marine Corps Reserve, his unit was called up for Korea. He was discharged in 1952. But, to all who knew him, he epitomized the saying: "Once a Marine, Always a Marine." John worked for the Lower Colorado River Authority for 39 years, originally hired as a lineman; he spent most of his LCRA years as an operator at the Mansfield and Austin Hydro Power Plants. He also worked a second job for many years. He was a tireless provider. His faith and his church were a calling he served well over many years. He indeed had the gifts of service and hospitality. John was an usher for services and a ticket taker for Wednesday night dinner at Hyde Park Baptist Church for many years. He would take on any task he was ever asked to do. He loved people and truly never met a stranger. John was a long time donor to the Blood and Tissue Center of Central Texas. He was an avid supporter of every activity in which his grandchildren ever participated and so very proud of each of them. He loved them deeply and was the best grandpa ever. His parents and his wife preceded him in death. Daughter Gayle McLendon Sheehan of Austin and her son, Jonathan Kirby Sheehan, of Austin and Fort Worth, survive him, as well as step-granddaughter, Sandi Sheehan and her family. He is also survived by son Jim Conway McLendon and his children, Austin Conway McLendon and his fiancée, Misti Brooke Scott and great-granddaughter, Hailey Lee Scott, Travis Farrow McLendon and Cooper Sarah McLendon, all of Georgetown. His sister, Marion Inez McLendon, also survives him. John is also survived by his cousin, Glen Scott, of Dallas. Additionally, he is survived by his sister-in-law, Helen Cook of Crockett and her children, Shirley Ann Cook Morris, Las Vegas; Betty Jo Cook Van, Crockett; Tommy Lee Cook, Houston; and their spouses and children. Visitation is Sunday, June 7, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home. Services at 10:00 a.m., Monday, June 8 at 10:00 a.m. at Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel. Graveside service will follow at Capital Memorial Park Cemetery, Pflugerville.
