Dr. Spencer was a Texas resident all his life. He graduated from Stratford High School in Houston, TX and then went to Austin and graduated from UT with a B.A. in biology in July of 1989. He was accepted right after graduation to the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio with his medical doctor license in 1993. He always said “I’m free in “93”. John proposed to Renee Farwell and they married in Las Vegas on June 1st 1995. They both moved to Austin and John enrolled in the Austin Psychiatric Residency Program at the Austin State Hospital under Dr. Sutton. He completed the residency program in 1997. He started working at the Austin Travis County MHMR for years before starting a private practice in 2000, where he and his wife worked in N.W. Austin and helped many people/patients. He was a member of the Texas Medical Association, Travis County Medical Society, and American Psychiatric Association and the Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians. He also did part-time work as a sub investigator at Community Clinical Research. He was predeceased by his beloved Pokey, and grandparents. John is survived by his wife Renee, her sister Robynn, husband Jonathan and their children Jadynn and Jonathan Jr., her brother’s Rick and Rich, her father Richard and step-mom Karen and grandmother Hazel, of Florida; members on his side of the family, sister’s Karen Renee and Kim Cheri, nieces Sabree Rain, and Haley, also his mother Kathleen and father John Sr. from Houston, Texas. He was loved by many people, co-workers, family and patients. He loved the outdoors, boating, his dogs and especially his motorcycles. A private service will be at West Beach Marine. In lieu of flowers please make donations to NAMI (The National Alliance on Mental Health) which he was extremely compassionate about and wanted more awareness for the mentally ill.

Renee - Just wanted you to know I'm thinking about you today. No doctor will ever compare to Dr. Spencer in my opinion. I have yet to find another doctor I feel comfortable with or who has the integrity, compassion and genuine concern Dr. Spencer offered during every single appointment. I hope you are doing well....

Hey Johnny, Happy Birthday Bro. I love and miss you so much. I cling to the wonderful memories we made being silly in Florida for all of our spring breaks and running from the gypsies in Rome. Riding mopeds in Greece and meeting cool soccer teams in Paris. Those are the wonderful memories I will forever hold in my heart. You have left quite the legacy Brother, with all of your wonderful patients entries, it is proof that you cared for them as deeply as you always proclaimed to care for their well being and you gave them your heart and soul, your everything. You saved so many that were lost and I am so very proud of you. I miss you so much it hurts. I love you always, your sissy forever, Ne'Ne'

I will truly miss Dr. Spencer. He was a very talented and gifted doctor. Like Walter said, visiting Dr. Spencer was more like visiting an old friend. He never made fun of my struggles and always encourged me. Doctors like him are few and far between. May God bless his family and help them through this difficult time.

I just received a copy of Dr. Spencer's obituary from a dear friend. Dr. Spencer was my doctor for the past two years. I was terribly shocked to read of his passing! I had no idea. I called to make an appointment in June, to see him earlier than my already scheduled appointment in July. However, I got the message that he was closing his office. I was SHOCKED! I left my name and number, and Dr. Spencer called me back to recommend another doctor. He didn't tell me that anything was wrong, only that he was moving on to new things. I hope he wasn't ill and suffering! I am so terribly shocked and sad. Renee, I didn't realize y'all were maried! I am so sorry for your incredible loss. Dr. Spencer was an incredible listener! He would always provide feedback, and explain things (very complex things) in simple ways. I don't know many doctors that can relay information this well to their patients. He wanted you to be informed and educated! He provided me with a wealth of information about myself and my struggles. He always made me feel that I was making progress, and would remind me of how far I had come. He will be greatly missed! I was only one of his patients; he will have no idea the extent that his care and knowledge touched peoples' lives. I am soo incredibly sorry for the loss of this amazingly gifted person and doctor. My heart goes out to all of his family!
