He was born in Austin on January 13, 1934, to John and Ettie Volz.
John was a lifelong Austin resident and served his country in the United States Army after being drafted in 1955. He served as a medic in Korea and was honorably discharged in 1957.
Following his military service, John worked for the Texas School Book Depository, where he became a warehouse supervisor responsible for supplying school textbooks. He retired in 1991. After retirement, he continued to serve his community, including service on a grand jury.
John was a longtime and active member of The Church On Congress Avenue, where his faith and relationships with his church family were an important part of his life.
John was a quiet, independent man who lived life on his own terms. He enjoyed crossword puzzles, Scrabble, and spending time with family. He will be remembered for his dry sense of humor, strong independence, devotion to his faith, and service to his country and community.
John is survived by his sister, Patricia Gilliland and her husband Patrick Gilliland; nieces Connie Minton and Karen St. Martin; nephews Don Gilliland and John Gilliland; and extended family and friends.
He will be honored with a Visitation at The Church on Congress Avenue, 1511 South Congress Ave, Austin, TX 78704, on September 10, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00 am, with Burial at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Cemetery, 6300 William Cannon Drive, Austin, TX 78749, on September 10, 2026.
