Johnny Lee Washington, Sr.

On Saturday, July 18, 2026, Johnny Lee Washington Sr., surrounded by the love of his family, peacefully departed this earthly life, answered his Master's call, and entered eternal rest. He was 76 years old. Born in Bastrop, Texas on May 3, 1950, he was the fourth child born to Sammie J. Washington and Minnie Lee Washington.

Johnny was a proud American, devoted family man, and respected member of the Bastrop, Texas community. In his youth, he attended schools in the Bastrop Independent School District. After high school, he enrolled at the Gary Job Corps Center in San Marcos, Texas, where he studied welding and graduated at the top of his class, earning a Gold Seal Certification. His gift for welding went far beyond skill; it reflected his creativity, precision, and ability to turn hard work into craftsmanship – a gift he generously shared by training his brothers and others in the trade. In March 1970, Johnny was united in marriage to the love of his life, LouAnna Woodard. Soon after, he was drafted into the United States Army, where he completed two tours of duty in Vietnam and honorably served as a sergeant. As a Vietnam veteran, Johnny embodied the courage, sacrifice, and dedication that remained evident throughout his life.

Together, Johnny and LouAnna shared 56 beautiful years of a loving and enduring marriage, building a family grounded in faith, strength, and unwavering commitment. Their union was a shining example of lifelong devotion and partnership.

Johnny carried the same dedication and integrity into his professional life, working more than 33 years with the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) as an Engineer Analyst at the Sim Gideon Power Plant in Bastrop. Known for his dependable work ethic and technical knowledge, he took great pride in his work, especially in the boiler area, where his skill and attention to detail earned the respect of those who worked alongside him.

Johnny accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age and was baptized at Union Chapel A.M.E. Church, where his lifelong journey of faith began. He remained a dedicated member of Union Chapel throughout his life, serving diligently in the church's ministries. At Union Chapel, he faithfully served in many capacities, including Steward, Trustee, and Financial Officer, and was a trusted officer and representative of the congregation. He also loved to sing and was a devoted member of the choir. Johnny was steadfast in his support of the life and legacy of the church by ensuring the care, maintenance, and day-to-day operations of the church, and participating in local, district, and connectional meetings. He also played a key role in the construction of the church building that stands today – a lasting testament to his dedication and service. Johnny was a strong supporter of the church's youth, attending youth conventions and encouraging young people in their spiritual growth. Church members and loved ones will fondly remember one of his favorite sayings, “the protocol has already been established.” Often shared with a smile, the phrase became one of his signatures and always brought a warm chuckle to those around him. His servant's heart and unwavering faith will be remembered as a testament to a life well lived.

Affectionately known as “Bobby” or “Uncle Bobby,” he was a proud and devoted father, brother, friend, and family man whose greatest joy came from spending time with those he cherished most. He freely offered wisdom, encouragement, and support to everyone around him. Bobby embraced life with joy and enthusiasm. He enjoyed many hobbies, but few things brought him more happiness than dancing. Whether at family reunions, celebrations, or gatherings, he could always be found on the dance floor, bringing smiles to those around him. He and LouAnna shared a passion for cooking and spent many years serving delicious food at community events. Together they operated Aunt Lou's Kitchen, a beloved local favorite known for serving some of the best burgers in town! Through his warmth, laughter, and generosity, he left an unforgettable mark on all who knew him.

Johnny will be remembered for his quiet strength, generous heart, and unwavering devotion to his faith, family, and community. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy and love will live on in the countless lives he touched. His life was a blessing, his memory a treasure, and he will never be forgotten.

Johnny was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Sammie Lee Washington, Sr., Hulisher (Randy) Washington, Clarence Williams, Jr., Larrie Washington, Sr., Andrew Washington, and Herman Washington.

He leaves to cherish his precious memory his beloved wife, LouAnna; his daughters, Shonte Williams, Erika Washington, and Valerie Espinoza Flores; his sons, Bret Greene (Erica), Johnny Washington, Jr., Bobby Washington, and Izaiyah Washington; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; his siblings, Darnell Washington (Esther), Louis Ray Washington, Sr. (Tiffany), Patricia Washington-Phillips, and Brian Washington, Sr. (Ruthie); his sisters-in-law, Ruth Washington, Sharon Washington, Roxanne Washington, Cynthia Washington, and Gloria Washington; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
