Joni Regina Hughes
Joni’s beautiful voice and artistic world ended on May 29, 2011, but the images that she gave life to will continue to provide pleasure to those of us who have had the pleasure of seeing them. She was born at James Connally Airbase in Waco, Texas and had the pleasure of living in Waco, England, Italy, Missouri, Abilene, and Austin.
Joni was baptized at Centennial Christian Church in Abilene, Texas. She graduated from Austin High School and attended Texas Southern University and the University of Houston.
She participated in stage shows at St. Edwards University and showed and sold her art around the city of Austin. She participated in politics and community services, including lending her voice and concerns at CapMetro meetings.
As the curtains descend on the end of winter and spring, the life of Joni R. Hughes bids a final farewell to the world as we know it. She leaves on her next journey to be greeted by her grandparents Lawrence Quinn and Willette Cannon Quinn, her father John H. Hughes and stepfather Robert W. Sunderland, sisters Glenda Hughes and Paula Hughes Holloway. Wishing her blessed peace, her mother Ernestine Q. Sunderland and sisters Michelle and Linda Hughes, niece Quintessa M. Hughes, nephew Quincy Proctor, Aunt Ollie Q. Simms, stepmother Miriam Hughes, Uncle Lawrence Coleman, and Great Aunt Mary Q. Thomas, wave farewell along with stepbrother Lawrence Sunderland and stepsisters Linda and Becky Sunderland, in addition to a host of other relatives and friends.
The family invites friends and other family members to join us at the Assumption Cemetery at 10:00 am on Friday June 3, 2011 for interment of Joni. On Saturday June 4, 2011 at 11:00 am, we welcome you to join us for a memorial service at the University Christian Church at 2007 University Ave. After the memorial we will have a reception where family will greet and thank the attendees.
Thank you to all of our church family/friends, the staff at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Homes, the staff at Assumption Cemetery, and all those who have shown us such love and comfort.
