Our beloved Joseph Luigi (Louis) Grappo, age 82, resident of Austin was called by our Heavenly Father on Sunday, January 24, 2016. He was born on February 28, 1933, in East Palestine, Ohio to Alexander and Mary Louise Grappo. He was the youngest of twelve children. He was preceded in death by his parents, 5 brothers and 5 sisters. He will be greatly missed by his friends and family.
He is survived by his wife Maryann Grappo of 34 years, his daughters Olga Marion and Roxann Revelle of Memphis, TN, 19 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren.
He joined the Army at age 15 and served under Colonel Faith at the Chosin Reservoir during the Korean Conflict. He was one of only 300 survivors from the battle at the Chosin Reservoir. He was wounded during the Korean Conflict and was awarded the Purple Heart. He has now joined another Army in heaven with Our Savior.
He retired at age 59, as a Manufacturing Engineer from Tandem Computers in Santa Clara, CA. and moved to Austin, TX. He spent his retirement enjoying his hobbies which were reading, listening to music and especially dancing to it.
He was known to all that knew and loved him as the great storyteller. He always had a captive audience when he talked about his life adventures. He traveled the world and experienced things in life that most of us just dream about. He had a very rich, exciting and colorful life.
The family will receive friends on Friday, January 29, 2016 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a Recitation of the Rosary beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Ignatius the Martyr Catholic Church with Father Paul Ybarra, Celebrant. Interment will immediately follow at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Memorial Park.
Serving as pallbearers are Joe Martinez, Jr., Michael Martinez, Steven Martinez, Phillip Martinez, Louis Grappo, George Mejia, Gilbert Hernandez and Tony Galindo.
A special thanks to all the caregivers at Hospice Austin for the outstanding care my beloved husband received.
