Josephine Bradley Hubbard-Streiff had a full life, serving and ministering to family, friends, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was just a few months short of 90 years on this earth. Having been born and raised in Birchtree, Missouri from 1922 and living in Texas for over the last ½ of her life, she considered Austin her home and her place in life. Jo is the name her friends gave her, Memie was the name her daughters, granddaughters, grandsons, great-granddaughters, great-grandsons knew her by.
Josephine left Birchtree, MO at a very young age to go to college some distance away, and studied to be a schoolteacher. After teaching in a one room schoolhouse, along with teaching multiple ages and school level classes in that one room classroom, she applied for a civil service job in Washington D.C. This is where she met Lt. Col. Mahlon Hubbard, a Pentagon Officer and Official. From a stint with the Dept. of Defense, the Central Intelligence Agency, and later the retail clothing store that she owned with her husband in Virginia-Washington D.C. area, she moved to Tampa, FL then to the San Antonio, TX - Ft. Sam Houston area. She returned to civil service once again for a second career serving the government, prior to moving to Austin in the early 80’s. She retired from Bergstrom Air Force, Strategic Air Command as Secretary and Administrator to the base General in mid-1990’s. Colonel Hubbard predeceased her in 1979. She married George Streiff in 2008 in Round Rock, TX and Mr. Streiff survives her.
She leaves her two daughters, Pamela Williams (Austin, TX) and Carol King (Waukesha, WI); her two granddaughters, Karen Ogle, (Austin, TX) and Jennifer Klawes (Milwaukee, WI); three grandsons, Richard Williams (of Richardson, TX.), Timothy King (Milwaukee, WI) and Jeremy King, (Waukesha, WI). In addition she is survived by two great-granddaughters, Courtney Ogle and Lauren Ogle (Austin, TX); and great-grandson, Simon Klawes (Milwaukee, WI). The family would also like to acknowledge the help and loving care of her numerous and close friends from Lakeline Retirement Community as well as the caregivers of Hearthstone Care Facility and St. David Rehabilitation Hospital, whom went above and beyond the call of duty to help her in her final days of need and specialized care.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. on Monday, June 27, 2011 at Cook-Walden\Chapel of the Hills Funeral Home in Austin, TX with the funeral service to follow at 3:00 p.m. Interment will be held at 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday, June 28, 2001 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzback Road, San Antonio, TX 78209.
Josephine was one of those rare individuals that worked hard to make friends and retain friendships everywhere she went. She made lively and loving ambassadors out of all of us, as well as living life to the fullest, and wanted you to do the same in your lives. She believes that God has a special place for her and I am sure that she takes pride in reserving a place for all of us at the same table. She always believed that she had better things to do than be imprisoned in this infirmed body. We feel that she is right.
