Juanita Thornton Magnuson

Surrounded by her family, Juanita Flinn Magnuson passed away after a long illness at her home in Austin, Texas, on July 27, 2026. She was 90 years old. She is survived by her husband, Bill Sr., with whom she was married for 67 years, and her two children, Melissa “Missy” Douthit and Bill Magnuson, Jr. and their spouses, David Douthit and Paul Castanon respectively.

Juanita was born the only child of John Richard Thornton and Cleo Martin Thornton in Montgomery, Alabama and raised in Abbeville, Alabama. Throughout her life, she regaled family and friends with her stories of growing up in a small rural town, where her father owned a Western Auto store. She especially liked to share stories of her childhood adventures and misadventures with her lifelong friends, Peggy Sykes and Eleanor Cheatham. The trio referred to themselves as the “Abbeville Belles”.

In 1954, Juanita enrolled in Huntingdon College and later transferred to the University of Alabama, from which she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in education in 1958. She wanted to be a teacher and work with children. While a student, she met Bill Sr. on a double date. Bill had returned to the University of Alabama after completing a tour of duty with the US Army in Europe. They were married in Abbeville on June 2, 1959.

Bill and Juanita settled in Birmingham, Alabama, where Bill began his career. Juanita became a home economics teacher in those early marriage years. She then became a homemaker when Bill Jr. was born in 1961 followed by Missy in 1966.

Juanita’s greatest happiness in life was her family and friends. She had a unique gift for creating a warm and welcoming home, a gift that sustained her family through many moves. She excelled at devising crafts and games for the entertainment of her children, creating fun opportunities for them to learn, and volunteering as a den mother and troop leader in their scouting activities. She was a constant and loving presence not only in the lives of her family but also a devoted caretaker to generations of family pets, including dogs, a rabbit, a gerbil, and even fish.

Throughout her life, Juanita took great joy in organizing and hosting lunches, dinners, parties, and other events with family and friends. She especially enjoyed celebrating holidays, of which her favorite season was Christmas – she loved decorating for Christmas. She loved to cook and entertain. She especially loved having Bill Jr and Missy’s groups of teenage friends over to spend time – the more the merrier and everyone was welcome! Back in the day, Bill & Juanita hosted an annual Christmas Eve party that was much anticipated and enjoyed by all. Bill & Juanita were also life long Alabama football fans and she loved to organize watch parties with their Bama friends. Roll Tide! Her laughter and love brought smiles to everyone around her.

Juanita was a person of deep and profound Christian faith. A lover of music, she was a valued member of many church choirs. In times of crisis and joy, she turned to her faith. True to her beliefs, she exhibited great compassion toward others and helped those in need.

Juanita has given us many wonderful memories. The most precious of which was her joy in living and her sense of humor. In recent years as she struggled with Alzheimer’s disease, our greatest joy was to make her laugh and smile. She always loved angels. In our last words, we held her hand and told her to fly with the angels and feel the beauty of eternal life and peace. Heaven has gained another sweet and loving angel to watch over us all.

We give thanks for the gift of Juanita’s life. In our grief at her loss, we take comfort in the faith and joy that she instilled in us. We will remember her in a small private service at a later date. The family wishes to thank Juanita’s compassionate and loving caregivers at Maravilla at the Domain and Suncrest Hospice who worked tirelessly to support her during her final days.
