She went to Sacred Heart grade school and High School. In High School she started for the varsity basketball team and even though she was only 5’4” tall she scored 30+ points per game. After graduation she worked for a dentist named Dr. Goodey. She intended to eventually enter the convent and become a nun, but after meeting Bob Abbott (a USMA prep cadet) those plans went to the wayside. They were married directly after Abby, (as Bob became known by Judy’s family), graduated from the Air Force Academy. She was more than the typical Air Force wife. She was very involved in the POW/MIA Bracelet program. Judy and Abby were blessed with 2 children Robbie and Jennifer. Tragically after 15 years of marriage Abby was take from Judy and their 2 children on May 10, 1979, during a military exercise called Red Flag. Judy raised her 2 children whom she loved and adored. After they left for college, she became bored with her bridge club and taking care of her much-loved black lab, Sully. A friend told her of a job listing for a fraternity house mother; which she would be perfect for and encouraged her to apply. Jennifer drove her to the Delta Tau Delta house; Judy walked in, came across several Delts and announced that she wanted to be their mother. The rest is history. She served as their house mother for over 20 years. Running the house in every way and helping to raise over a thousand men in the process.
Judy loved sports and would often go to the Posse to watch her Washington Commanders, Golden state warriors or anything U.T.
Judy never met a stranger and was a fiercely loyal friend and a devoted mother and grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Rosemary Sullivan; her husband, Maj. Robert Louis Abbott Jr.; brothers-in-law, Horace Smith and Charles Abbott; sister-in-law, Linda Abbott; and nephew, Christopher Lee Smith.
She is survived by her children, Robert Lewis Abbott III and Jennifer Lynn Abbott; grandchildren, Downing, RG, Emory, Connor, and Sterling; and sisters, Joan Smith and Jean Marie Poholsky.
A visitation for Judy will begin at 10:00 a.m., Friday, December 29, 2023 at Cook-Walden Funeral Home, with a service to begin at 11:00 a.m. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Friday December 29, 2023 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Road, San Antonio, Texas.
