Katherine Ann Pinion, our beloved “Mimi”, passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 6th, 2019.

Katherine was born December 22, 1950 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. She grew up in Houston, Texas with her beloved mother, Gloria Byrns, and only brother, Bill Grimes, both who proceeded her in death. In 1969, Katherine married the love of her life, John Pinion. They raised two children, Johnny and Dahnya, making their home in Austin, Texas for 35 years.

She is survived by her devoted husband, John Pinion, of 50 years; her daughter Dahnya Smith and husband Brian Smith; son John Pinion IV and wife Michelle Pinion; her four grandchildren she so affectionately referred to as “her loves” Alexandria Katherine Smith, John Franklin Pinion V, Hudson Timothy Smith, and Austin Landry Pinion.

She was a beloved wife, mother, friend and Mimi. She was our Queen, the back bone of our family, and a second mother to many. Her golden heart showered us all with unconditional love and no one like Katherine could make you feel uniquely special and loved like she did.

For the past 5 years, she fought hard to spend more time with her grandchildren and loved ones. There was never a stronger fighter than Katherine Pinion.

Now it is her time for well-deserved rest.

Kathy was a beautiful woman both inside and out. We remember she was the first one to welcome us to the neighborhood 34 years ago! Our daughters played together all the time.
One day Dahnya & Heather came in from playing, in my backyard saying they had seen a huge rattler! I called Kathy and she sent Johnny over with a shovel, to kill it. When he arrived, no snake. Kathy called me back to say those little girls probably saw a small grass snake. We would laugh about that for years.
Kathy was a wonderful mother to her children and a fabulous grandmother! Those children were the light of her life. She will be greatly missed. Love to all her family, Debbie & Denny

Kathy was like a sister instead of a cousin. Every summer she came to our house in Mississippi and spent a week or two with us. Her Grandmother, my Aunt Vi , would come to visit and would always take her shopping for clothes. I can assure you, those outfits were much appreciated by Kathy. She so loved her Grandmother and Aunt Vi knew it and when sKathy came to visit everything was for Kathy, and looking back it should have been. You see Kathy was an adult sooner that most children, helping Gloria, her Mom, with her brother and taking responsibity for things most children her age knew nothing about. No words of pity ever crossed her lips as she was so grateful for her family.

That love of family was what Kathy was all about. Big Johnny, Little Johnny and Dahnya were foremost in her life. Her son-in-law and daughter-in-law were lucky to have such a mother-in-law and they knew it! Of course, then as the Grandchildren came along they were her topic of conversation as it should be.

Kathy never complained about her illness, always stating how grateful she was for her time with family. Big Johnny loved her and cared for her up to the end. He and Kathy were made for each other and they cherished that love.

I shall miss our conversations and wish I could pick up my phone and hear her precious voice say “hello darling”. Indeed my life was made better for having Kathy in it. The love was there and I shall keep my memories within my heart and know that God has gained a beautiful, loving and deserving Angel.

I knew Kathy in our high school days at Lamar High School back in 1967 & 68. What a special lady she was, beautiful both inside and out. We lost touch after those High School days but the effect her passing has had on me speaks volumes as to what an incredible Lady she was, I am sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire family.

Kathy
I can see your face, hear you laugh
As if it was only yesterday.
I see you sit and smile
Delight in family and friends.

You are still real to me
I see you inside my mind
If I look, I will find you
Pretty as always

We first met when John hired Andy to work for him years ago. I will never forget how kind and loving you were from day one. Always dressed to perfection and one of the most beauty ladies I had ever seen. I will always remember walking into your house around Christmas and your tree took my breath away. It was magical. I’ll never forget our trip to Vegas and the fun we all had. I remember even back then how much you talked about how you couldn’t wait to have grandkids and how very much you loved your family. You gave so much love to everyone around you and you will be missed by so many. You’re in our hearts forever!
We love you!

After losing my mom last November, I posted a poem on Facebook and Katherine was one of the people who left a reply. I ran across it the other day and wanted to share it with the Pinion family in hopes that it will provide some comfort during this difficult time.

I Heard Your Voice In The Wind Today - Author Unknown

Katherine's reply was as follows, and it made me smile knowing that she is in heaven now with the women she mentioned:

"I miss you three so much. These are the three women in my life that meant the world to me. Mammaw Vi, Mammaw Bea, and my wonderful Mother. These three women loved me , cared for me, give me love and hope. These three never forget and still miss. I all ways want them back. One day I will be their with them. Thank you god for giving me these three women in my life"

"Hello Kathy. This is Kathy"
"Hello Darling" you would always say.
They say every child you help raise is a step towards heaven. Thanks for helping raise sooo many including my Valerie. They will always need you and I know you will never be far away from any of us. All we have to do is just breathe in the stuff you taught us and we will make it. Luv you.

Mrs. Pinion was a beautiful soul who loved her family deeply. I have always admired how close the Pinion family is. I will miss our long phone talks, her advice and smile. You are truly missed by many.
