Kathryn, known as Carlene to her friends, was born to Ernest and Leona Wallace on December 7, 1939 in Dillon, South Carolina. There she, along with her two siblings, Lanwood and Eleanor, grew up on a farm where they grew tobacco, cotton, and soybeans. She went on to graduate from Dillon High School in 1958.
As a child she met Harold McDaniel who she eventually fell in love with and on February 8, 1968 they got married by Pastor Frank Zedick at the First Baptist Church in their hometown of Dillon, South Carolina. They were happily married for the next 54 years.
The couple remained in their hometown and attended Pleasant Grove Baptist Church until 1986 when they moved to Austin, Texas.
Carlene worked at the Selma Hosiery Mill in Dillon for 9 years before going on to spend the next 50 years as a waitress. In her spare time she worked as a clown, delighting in bringing joy to children. A point of great pride to her was that she made her own clown costumes. Sewing was not Kathryn’s only textile related hobby, she was taught to crochet by an aunt at only 5 years old and carried that with her for the rest of her life.
She will be missed greatly by everyone who loved her.
A funeral service for Kathryn will be held Monday, November 21, 2022 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Weed-Corley-Fish South Chapel, 2620 South Congress Avenue, Austin, Texas 78704. A graveside service will occur Tuesday, November 22, 2022 from 10:15 AM to 10:45 PM at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, TX 78209.
