Born in Ulysses, Nebraska, to the late Gilbert and Gertrude, Kathy was raised alongside her brother and sister, under the care of their father. She graduated from high school and began her career at Bell Telephone. She later met and married Gene Stubbs, and together they moved to Austin, Texas, where they raised three children—Karen, Frank, and Doug.
During her children's school years, Kathy was a dedicated mother, often wearing many hats. She served as a Boy Scout troop leader, room mother, summer camp leader, church volunteer and secretary, election volunteer, and family party and event planner. She was always ready to support her community and her family in any way she could.
Kathy also earned a diploma from Durham Business School and went on to work at an accounting firm. She then worked for TABC, and, for the majority of her career, at MHMR, where she retired after 42 years. She enjoyed the work and the people at MHMR, embracing the challenges and making a difference in the lives of those around her.
Kathy had many passions and hobbies that enriched her life. She loved country music, especially the sounds of Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, John Denver, Charley Pride, Loretta Lynn, and Dolly Parton. She was an avid gardener, growing tomatoes, okra, squash, and corn, and enjoyed attending plant shows at Zilker Gardens. Kathy was also a lover of the arts—attending plays at St. Edwards University and Zachary Scott Theater, taking oil painting classes, and frequenting arts and crafts shows at local venues like the auditorium and Laguna Gloria. She was an amateur painter who also enjoyed sewing, quilting, and learning new crafts through classes at Michael’s. Kathy had an interest in cooking that extended to immersing herself in culinary television shows and cooking magazines. She also delighted in scouring thrift stores, reveling in the treasure hunt for hidden gems and unique finds.
Her love for animals was also a key part of her life. Kathy rescued a colony of cats from her workplace at MHMR, spayed and neutered them, and welcomed them into her home, where they happily became family members. She also enjoyed watching birds, particularly a family of cardinals, from her back porch.
Kathy enjoyed traveling and long phone conversations with friends and family. Always staying connected, in that way, with those she loved.
Above all, Kathy was known for her kindness, friendliness, and her love for her family.
Kathy was predeceased by her son, Doug; father, Gilbert; and sister, Doris.
She was a woman of warmth, generosity, and strength, and will be deeply missed by her children, Karen and Frank; her brother, Robert; sisters-in-law, Ann and Gwendolyn; her granddaughters, grandsons, great-grandsons, great-granddaughters; nieces, nephews, and friends.
Kathy was a bright light in the lives she touched, and she will be missed more than words can express. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Inhabit Hospice in Austin, TX, for the extraordinary care they provided during Kathy’s final days.
A memorial service for Kathy will be held Thursday, November 14, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Weed-Corley-Fish South Chapel, 2620 South Congress Avenue, Austin, Texas 78704.
