Kirtis Leroy Ward

Kirtis Leroy Ward was born on March 20, 1968 to the late Betty Ward and Shack Ward in Austin, TX. He married Janis Clements 9/21/1989. They welcomed three children. Later, he remarried and was blessed with a bonus son, who he loved and embraced as his own.

He attended Reagen and McCallum High school and later got his GED. He was a gifted and accomplished athlete from a young age. His speed, talent, and determination made him a standout athlete in football, basketball, and track. He proudly helped lead his teams to championship victories, creating memories and accomplishments that remained a source of pride throughout his life. His athletic talent was just one of the many qualities that made him special and left a lasting impression on those who knew and loved him. But his talents extended far beyond the playing field. He had a deep love for German Shepherds, and took great pride in working with, training, and caring for his dogs. He was also a phenomenal cook. He had a gift of bringing people together through food. His cooking, like his music, was something he shared with those around him.

Above all, one of his greatest accomplishments and greatest sources of pride was being a father. He loved his children deeply and was immensely proud of each of them.

Professionally, he worked as a waiter in some of the finest restaurants where his exceptional service, warmth, and ability to connect with people made him memorable. His charm and personality were evident in everything he did. It was no surprise that everyone loved him.

Kirtis Leroy Ward was called home to be with the Lord on September 10, 2026.

Kirtis was preceded in death by his mother Betty Ward, sisters Rhonda Newbury & Tishana Ward, and several beloved aunts, uncles, and other family members.

Kirtis leaves to cherish his loving memory to his children, Courtney McKay, Lindsey Rangel, Kirtis Ward, and Andre Phillips; his sister Stephanie Ward; his brothers Kent and Kenneth Ward; 11 grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

He will be remembered for his quick wit, personality, and infectious smile to those around him. He was incredibly intelligent - truly a "walking encyclopedia", with an amazing wealth of knowledge and always something interesting to share. He had a deep love of learning and was an avid reader of National Geographic, as well as Black history and ancestry. He had a gift for bringing people together through his music and was a loyal, genuine friend to many. His joyful spirit will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
