Laura Camou peacefully left this earthly life on November 26, 2008 in the presence of her beloved family and loyal canine companion, Mimi. She was a devoted daughter, loyal sister, loving mother, and extraordinarily generous "Grandmama". One of two beautiful identical twins born to Celia and Lamberto Camou in Altar, Mexico on September 3, 1930, Laura was a life-long learner and voracious reader, who insisted on following her older brother on his walk to school, and enrolled herself in first grade at the age of four. She was a fearless and natural horsewoman who never tired of exploring the varied terrain of her father's ranch in Sonora, Mexico. As an adult she worked as a bookkeeper, a wigmaker for the Hollywood film studios, and as an art dealer, while making several memorable trips abroad. She retired and moved to Austin in 1992 to be with her only daughter and her family. Laura spent these last 16 years thoroughly enjoying every aspect of her adored grandchildren's lives, enriching them with her intellectual curiosity and love for a good book, debate, and strong coffee. She also enjoyed cultivating her garden, rescuing animals, attending symphony performances and opera matinees with her daughter's family, and forging strong bonds with very special neighbors while maintaining close ties to her life-long friends. She was predeceased by her parents, siblings Gaston, Lamberto, Luis, Lourdes and Aurelia, and honorable grandson Scott Stapleton. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter and son-¬in-law, Cecilia and Russell Neuhaus, grandchildren Laura and Eric, sisters Yvette Alonso and Dolores Camou, and many dearly loved nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hospice Austin or the charity of your choice. Visitation will be on Sunday, November 30, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Weed Corley Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N. Lamar. A lively Fiesta de la Vida and scattering of the twins' ashes is planned for spring, 2009 in the sea of Cortez near Puerto Penasco, Mexico.
