Laurent Maurice Rene Gabriel Oget

Laurent Maurice René Gabriel Oget died unexpectedly and peacefully on October 14, 2024. He was 53 years old. Laurent was born on March 3, 1971, in St. Quentin, in Aisne, France. He lived with his parents in the little village of Fresnoy-le-Grand, where he attended school until his adolescence. He finished middle and high school at Henri Martin de St. Quentin, where he focused in Latin and Ancient Greek and passed the Baccalaureate Scientifique (serie C) with honors. In 1989, he entered the Lycee Louis le Grand in Paris, for a rigorous two-year preparatory course in science and math. He was admitted to the Ecole Normale Superieure de Cachan in 1991, formally becoming recognized as part of the French civil service as a math educator and researcher. At Cachan, he passed the agregation in Mathematics with a Diploma in computer science and was admitted to the University of Paris VII.

In addition to his studies, Laurent loved the arts, especially music and theater, and he enjoyed learning foreign languages. A guitarist, saxophonist and actor, he played the role of Louis XVI in July 1989 in the Place de Saint Quentin during the bicentenary of the French Revolution. While pursuing his advanced studies, he acted in and directed Feydeau plays. Laurent even spent a semester in New Orleans in 1995 as a graduate fellow - what better place to marry his love of mathematics and his passion for jazz? After returning to France, Laurent was a lecturer on the University of Paris 7 faculty from 1996-2000, while he wrote his dissertation, with a one year interruption for military service in 1997.

In 2000 Laurent took a leave of absence from the French Ministry of Education and emigrated to Atlanta, Georgia, in the United States, to work as a computer engineer with a small start-up named Zvolve. The next year, through the magic of Match.com, “le reseda” met “la rose” and Laurent’s leave of absence would be extended indefinitely. In 2005, Laurent married his wife Margaret Aymer, and they were overjoyed to become the parents of a son, Gabriel Albert Charles Oget, in 2013. Following Margaret’s career, in 2015 the family relocated to Austin, Tx, where Laurent worked for several companies, ending his career with Indeed.com

Throughout his life, Laurent remained a passionate lover of Marxist philosophy, especially Slavoc Zizek, an avid swimmer, a connoisseur of all kinds of music, and a passionate and generous cook. The family loved to travel, and together they flew to many lands. He played tenor saxophone for the Seed and Feed Marching Abominable and the Black Sheep Ensemble, in Atlanta; and for the Dead Music Capital Band, in Austin, Texas, where he could be seen in zombie makeup and a hat that read “Immigrant.” And when asked how he was doing, he would typically respond, “Living the Dream.”

Laurent is survived in death by his widow, Rev. Dr. Margaret Aymer Oget, son Gabriel Oget, parents Claude Havard and Maurice Oget, brother Fabien Oget, sister-in-law Muriel Gagneron, niece Lea Oget and many other family and friends.

Two gatherings of food, drink and music are planned to honor his life, on November 24 at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Austin TX; and in late December in France. Laurent Maurice René Gabriel Oget est décédé de façon inattendue et en paix le 14 octobre 2024. Il était âgé de 53 ans. Laurent est né le 3 mars 1971 à Saint-Quentin, dans l'Aisne, en France. Il a vécu avec ses parents dans le petit village de Fresnoy-le-Grand. Il était à l’école primaire et pour ses deux premières années de collège (6ème et 5ème) à Fresnoy le grand. En septembre 1983, il a quitté le collège de Fresnoy le grand pour être inscrit au collège Henri Martin de Saint Quentin afin de suivre des cours de latin et de grec ancien. Il est resté au collège Henri Martin, puis au lycée Henri Martin jusqu’en juin 1989 où il a obtenu un baccalauréat scientifique (série C) avec mention Très Bien. Après l’obtention de son baccalauréat, il a été admis au Lycée Louis Le Grand à Paris en classe préparatoire scientifique. Il a intégré l’école normale supérieure de Cachan. Il est alors devenu fonctionnaire dès juin 1991, afin de devenir enseignant chercheur. À Cachan, il a passé l'agrégation de mathématiques un diplôme d’études approfondies en informatique et a été admis à l'université de Paris VII pour préparer une thèse d’informatique.

Parallèlement à ses études, Laurent aime les arts, en particulier la musique et le théâtre, et il apprécie l'apprentissage des langues étrangères. Guitariste, saxophoniste et comédien, il joue le rôle de Louis XVI en juillet 1989 sur la place de Saint-Quentin à l'occasion du bicentenaire de la Révolution française. Tout en poursuivant ses études supérieures, il joue et met en scène des pièces de Feydeau. Laurent a même passé un semestre à la Nouvelle-Orléans en 1995 en tant que boursier - quel meilleur endroit pour marier son amour des mathématiques et sa passion pour le jazz ? Le sport n’était pas son fort mais il nageait de manière remarquable, féru aussi de sports nautiques. De retour en France, Laurent a été chargé d’enseignement à la faculté de Paris 7, et a préparé sa these. Sa préparation de thèse a été interrompue par son service militaire en 1997.

Peu après l’obtention de sa thèse de doctorat, en 2000, il a quitté la France pour une start up en informatique, s’est mis en disponibilité du ministère de l’éducation nationale. L'année suivante, par la magie de Match.com, « le reseda » rencontre « la rose » et le congé de Laurent est prolongé indéfiniment. Après quatre années, en 2005, Laurent épouse Margaret Aymer. Ils sont mariés pendant 19 ans et ont la joie de devenir les parents d'un fils, Gabriel Albert Charles Oget, en 2013. Suite à la carrière de Margaret, la famille s'est installée en 2015 à Austin, Tx, où Laurent a travaillé pour plusieurs entreprises, terminant sa carrière chez Indeed.com.

Tout au long de sa vie, Laurent est resté un passionné de philosophie marxiste, en particulier de Slavoc Zizek, un nageur passionné, un connaisseur de tous les types de musique et un cuisinier passionné et généreux. La famille aimait voyager et s'envolait ensemble vers de nombreux pays. Il a joué du saxophone ténor pour le Seed and Feed Marching Abominable et le Black Sheep Ensemble, à Atlanta, et pour le Dead Music Capital Band, à Austin, au Texas, où on pouvait le voir maquillé en zombie et coiffé d'un chapeau portant l'inscription « Immigrant ». Lorsqu'on lui demandait comment il allait, il répondait généralement : « Vivre le rêve ».

Laurent laisse dans le deuil sa veuve, la Révérende Margaret Aymer Oget, son fils Gabriel Oget, ses parents Claude Havard et Maurice Oget, son frère Fabien Oget, sa belle-sœur Muriel Gagneron, sa nièce Léa Oget et de nombreux autres membres de sa famille et ses amis.

Deux rassemblements autour de la nourriture, la boisson et la musique sont prévus pour honorer sa vie, le 24 novembre au Séminaire théologique presbytérien d'Austin (Texas) et fin décembre en France.
