

L.C. (Leon, Sonny) Sonntag was born near Clinton, Oklahoma on September 17, 1917 and died December 11, 2009. He attended the Clinton schools and was an honor student, participating in Future Farmers, wrestling, and debate. He attended Oklahoma State University while it was still Oklahoma A&M College. While in college he met Lera Lee Allen. They were married in 1939 and both graduated from Oklahoma A&M. They were members of the Methodist Church in Stillwater and started working with the high school youth of the church. They continued this work for many years. Leon worked with the Bureau of Reclamation in the field of irrigation and environment protection. He was drafted into the Air Force in 1943 and served three years as an instructor, a mechanic and as a separation specialist. He joined Toastmasters International in Amarillo, TX and continued his membership in Austin when he retired and returned to Austin. After retiring from his professional career, Leon spent many years as a volunteer associated with the Volunteer Council of the Austin State School, with Brookspring Reading is Fundamental and with the Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic. He was a long-time member of University United Methodist Church and of the Couples Plus Class of the church. He was a teacher in the high school youth department of the church and sponsored the high school youth group for many years. Leon was preceded in death by his wife Lera, two brothers, Clarence Sonntag and Charles Sonntag, and three sisters, Eunice McCall, Amelia Cedarstaff, and Marjorie Pigg. Family members – sisters Elsie Palmeri and Mary Cordial, many nieces, nephews and a multitude of friends will miss him greatly. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 16 at 9:00 a.m. at Weed-Corley-Fish North Lamar Funeral Home with funeral services following at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Forest Oaks Memorial Park. He would be honored by any gifts made to charities or groups of your choice.
