

After graduating from Concordia College, Moorhead, MN in 1965 with a degree in Concert Piano, Leighton taught music in Edina, MN. He married the love of his life, Hope Walfrid Erickson, in Red Wing, MN on July 13, 1968. They moved to Fergus Falls, MN where he opened the Quick Stop restaurant and served on the City Council. In 1980 they moved to Watertown, WI where Leighton started working at Bethesda Lutheran Home and later became the Director of Development. He served as Executive Director of the Lutheran Foundation of the Southwest in Austin, TX from 1989 until his retirement in 2001. Leighton loved God, his family, music, church and people. His love as father and husband were inspirational. He had a mischievous sense of humor, and always had a new story or joke to share. He never met a stranger. He enjoyed traveling and camping. Over the years he explored various creative pursuits including fused glass and Ukranian Easter eggs, and he enjoyed helping others discover the artist inside. Leighton passed away in Austin, TX on November 7, 2011 after a long struggle with Alzheimer's.
He is survived by his three daughters, Anna-Lisa E. Hunter of Mosinee, WI; Alycia J. Erickson of Austin, TX; and Iantha E. Scheiwe of Hong Kong. He has nine grandchildren: Cameron, Anna, Erick, Jonathan, James, Joshua, Eliada, Talia and Taran. He is also survived by his three siblings, Leland Erickson, Arland Erickson, and Astri Matson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hope W. Erickson and his parents, Christian and Leona Erickson.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 11th at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, North Lamar. Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 12, 2011 at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church.
