Born on October 10, 1948, Linda was raised and spent most of her life in Birmingham, Alabama. She majored in English and minored in history at Birmingham-Southern College and earned a master’s degree in English from Samford University. In 1970, she married William Bryant Frye; together they lovingly raised a daughter, Elizabeth Bradford Frye.
A devoted educator, Linda taught for three decades, primarily at Hueytown High School and Shades Valley High School. In that time, she worked with thousands of students, inspiring many to become lifelong readers. Linda, who took great pride in her profession, taught courses in U.S. and British literature, African American literature, southern literature, creative writing, and U.S. history.
A longtime member of Saint Stephen's Episcopal Church in Birmingham, Linda completed the Education for Ministry program, served on the vestry, and volunteered as church librarian. Her later years were spent in Austin, where she enjoyed gardening, caring for her rescue dogs, and spending long hours in conversation with her neighbors.
Linda was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-four years, William Bryant Frye, and parents, Robert Edward Crumley and Louise Morgan Crumley. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Bradford Frye; son-in-law, Coleman James Hutchison; brother, Ed Crumley; sister, Carol Finocchio (Michael); and several nieces and nephews.
Linda was known for her warmth, intellectual curiosity, and dry wit. She is beloved and will be deeply missed.
A memorial service will be held in Austin in the fall of 2026. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Greater Birmingham Humane Society.
