Lisa Anne Lockhart, born October 4, 1949, sweet soul and enthusiastic Longhorn fan, passed away in peace on October 29, 2021. Lisa was in the company and comfort of close friends. She was surrounded by fresh flowers, books and messages that brought her so much joy. Born to Thomas and Thelma Lockhart, Lisa moved several times during her early life before settling in Texas. She attended the University of Texas at Austin and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1972. A transplanted Austinite, she found a home at the University of Texas where she worked for 37 years.
Lisa was an Admissions Counselor who touched the lives of many thousands of students during her career at the University. Lisa always took the time to pay personal attention to the special qualities, needs and aspirations of students who came her way. As an Admissions Advisor, Lisa had a talent for recognizing prospective students with unique potential who would enhance the UT student body.
Assuming the role of “mother away from home”, Lisa was a passionate mentor to hundreds of students she recruited to work at the admissions office hosting campus tours to prospective Longhorns. Lisa maintained close relationships with her students long after many of them left Texas for careers around the world. Over her 37 years of welcoming students to her UT family, she fostered long lasting relationships that will carry on for many years and across generations. These former students are proud to carry on her legacy.
As a friend, Lisa was generous and giving, always arriving with a small gift to delight. She always had special treasures to share, often arriving with a polished heart-shaped stone from Nature’s Treasures or a book she thought would capture someone’s interest. Without fail, Lisa arrived with a smile, a story, and an opinion.
The Harry Ransom Center (HRC) fulfilled Lisa’s endless curiosity and brought so much inspiration and enjoyment to her. Lisa had an inquisitive mind and a devoted passion for the humanities. The Harry Ransom Center allowed her to travel on a journey outside the pages of the many books she read. A collector of books herself, she found comfort in history, preservation, and the craft of discovery. Lisa’s passion and commitment to UT, her students and the HRC will endure as her legacy, where she will be honored through an endowment in her name. This endowment will support access to experimental learning opportunities for students in perpetuity. In honor of her brother, this legacy also supports HRC’s ability to be accessible to visitors with special needs. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Lisa’s endowment at the University of Texas Harry Ransom Center - https://give.utexas.edu/?menu=OGPLISALOCKHART.
Her family and friends are thankful for the many ways she touched and influenced their lives. Preceded in death by two brothers and loving parents, Lisa is survived by her brother R. Bruce Lockhart and thousands of friends and colleagues who will remember her always.
A MEMORIAL SERVICE WILL BE HELD AT THE HARRY RANSOM CENTER ON THE UNIVERSITY of TEXAS CAMPUS ON APRIL 23, 2022, FROM 2pm-4pm. DUE TO THE PRESENCE OF BOTH ELDERLY AND VULNERABLE INDIVIDUALS, WE ASK THAT FACE MASKS BE WORN DURING THE MEMORIAL SERVICE.
Those who knew Lisa are welcome to join us for a celebration of her life.
