

Lloyd Chester Warren, 90, of Austin, TX, passed away, Friday, May 21, 2010. Mr. Warren was born, February 29, 1920 in Reno, OK son of the late Oscar Herbert and Nettie Elsie (Slough) Warren. The family moved to Lampasas, TX in 1927 and he graduated from high school in Lampasas and also from Mrs. Jackson's Business College. He attended Tarlatan College in Stephenville, TX and graduated from the Army's Command and General College. He married Margaret Lucille Elder on August 17, 1940. Mr. Warren retired from the United States Army after 38 years and one day as a full Colonel. He went into the Army on February 1, 1942. He was overseas for over three years. He was captured in North Africa on Feb. 14, 1943 and spent over 27 months in German prison camps. Most of the time was spent in Szubin, Poland in camp Oflag64. Shortly before was the war was over the Russians overran the camp and took command. He said the Russians were harder on them than the Germans. He escaped from the Russians at night. He said the Russians would not trade them back to the US according to Geneva Treaty. Some went to Siberia to the salt mines. He had two Purple Hearts. He was reported to have saved Amon Carter's life on one of the marches they were on after they were captured. He was an active member of the Loyal Order of Ruptured Ducks, 1st Armored Division, numerous military organizations, Elks, Masons, Shriners, Ex POW's and was Commander of the Tulsa Ex POW's in 1979. He retired from Gulf Oil with 29 years of service. Mr. Warren was preceded in death by his son Lloyd Charles Warren in 2001. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Margaret Warren of the home. Services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 26, 2010 in Mabry Chapel at Camp Mabry, Austin, TX. Graveside service with full Military Honors will follow at 2:30 p.m. in Oak Hill Cemetery in Lampasas, TX under the direction of Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home.
