

Lois Garner 1913-2004 Lois Merle (Awbrey) Garner, age 91, of Austin, Texas, and formerly of Victoria, Texas, died August 10, 2004. She was born on January 4, 1913, in Grosvenor, Texas, to Edith May (Lawhon) Awbrey and Robert Lee Awbrey. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Claiborne Garner, Sr., whom she married in 1935, and grandson Scott Carroll. She graduated salutatorian at Elgin High School in 1930 and received a B.A. degree with honors in mathematics from The University of Texas at Austin in 1934. She first taught in Port Lavaca, Texas, but spent most of her teaching career with the Victoria (Texas) Independent School District. She retired in 1977 with 29 years of service. At the time of her death she was a member of the Austin Retired Teachers Association, Texas Retired Teachers Association, Alpha Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, and the Austin Knife and Fork Club. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Victoria, Texas, for 38 years and a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Austin for 20 years, where she served as chair of the Needlecrafters group for 15 years. In 2004 the Needlecrafters group was renamed the Lois Garner Needlecrafters in her honor. She is survived by three children, Jane Garner, John C. Garner, Jr. and wife Shirley, Harlan B. Garner and wife Frances; four grandchildren, John B. Garner and his mother Chelley Wallack, Elizabeth Masarik and husband Jason, Alice Garner, Paul Carroll and wife Tonya; four great-grandchildren, Whitney Carroll Harper, Clayton Carroll, Camden Carroll, Ryan Masarik; and one great-great grandson, Connor Harper. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews and their families. A commemorative state flag flown in her honor above the state Capitol on August 10, 2004, was presented to the family along with a certificate. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, August 16, 2004, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Austin. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Victoria, Texas.
